    Hi,
I'm using an ethernet cord to connect my family computer to the one in my room so that we share internet. (family pc connects directly to internet) But I can't seem to get my network device to show up on the family pc to bridge the connection. The cable is tested and works fine. I used it months ago on an old computer.

I thought it would just automatically show up and then I bridge it to my internet connection, then viola, internet throughout the house.

Is there something else I need to do?

    Thanks

If you are connecting two machines together directly by their ethernet ports then the cable must be a crossover cable. The crossover cable flips the receive/transmit leads at one end.

It is a crossover cable. And I've used it before successfully. I just can't seem to get my family computer to detect the NIC in my new computer via the crossover cable.
If it would detect, then I could just bridge them and it should work.

So I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

How were you thinking that your family computer should detect the NIC in the new computer?

What IP addresses are you using in both the computers? You could make one machine 10.0.0.1 and the other machine 10.0.0.2. You should also configure NetBeui on each adapter.

    what OSes?
So ther are 2 nics in the family PC - one for your PC and the other to the internet?

The primary computer (family) is running XP Pro, and my new one is running some form of XP.. Pro as well I believe. There are 2 NIC's in the primary and 2 in mine as well. When I connect the CAT5 and run the network setup wizard, the 2 little computers show up as if connected on the primary PC, but on mine it has a yellow flag with exclamation stating limited or no internet detected..

One other thing I don't understand is since connecting the crossover cable in my network connections I'm now getting an "Internet Gateway" connection... I'm not sure if I need that, never had it before.

Evidently I don't know much about this, I just know it was a sinch last time. but I am beginning to understand a little bit more after reading up. Okay, here's the thing.. Network Connections is detecting my NIC, everything is detected. But when I try to bridge my working internet connection to the NIC with the crossover cable I get the following error ..
"To create a network bridge you must select at least two LAN or High-Speed Internet Connections that are not being used by internet connection sharing"

What does that mean? I am using the same internet connection I've had for a few years now and was using the last time I networked a computer to my room and I am also trying to bridge it to the same exact NIC which I know is working perfectly fine. As well as the CAT5 cable, also in perfect working order..

One of the network cards you are trying to bridge has Internet sharing configured which is not allowed. The reason is that the network card connected to the Internet can not be on the same subnet as the rest of your connections.

The family computer is connected to the modem and your new computer via a crossover cable. In your new computer one nic is connected via crossover to the family computer, where is the other nic connected?

In my new computer I have an ethernet port that appears to be connected to the motherboard, it's an intel pro network connection, and I installed a Linksys NIC to use just in case. I have the crossover connected into the Linksys NIC, running to my family computer into the Linksys NIC installed into it.

The family computer is getting internet just fine. I just can't bridge the connection to the NIC connection without getting that error. What do I need to change?
I am only trying to connect one computer, but if I bought a hub would that help?

    Thanks

    You don't need a bridge.

Configure both ends of the crossover cable as 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2.

Set up the family computer for Internet sharing on the nic card that points to the Internet.
