Dogpile - Gateway Timeout

I LOVE :heart the Dogpile search engine and usually use it as my default; However, recently when I dbl-click on it I get a Gateway Timeout message and no matter what I try I can't get it to open.

This happens on my Pentium II - Win98 machine, on a Win98 - Pentium III and on a Win Xp - Pentium IV.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening or what to do about it?

    Thanks
    Cody

Thanks for the suggestion Plodr, but I've tried that on all the machines and it just gives the same result. I'm wondering if either Internet Explorer or Dogpile changed something in their programming or if maybe Dogpile went out of business - but I can't find any evidence of either, Very puzzled at this point :confused

No, they did not go out of business because the site loads fine for me.
I'd say it is a problem with your ISP.
If you are on broadband, find the DNS IPs you are using. Write them down then replace them with
    Open DNS 208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220

    Thanks again Plodr.
All three machines I mentioned are on different ISPs
The Pentium II is on Net Zero dial-up (that is my personal machine)
The Pentium III is on Telus broadband
The Pentium IV is on a high-speed network (government contracted agency)
and I forgot about my friend's Pentium IV - HP - on Shaw broadband (same results)

    Hi

Try a different browser on your home PC to test connection, Opera ( listed as working in Win98 but no PC with that OS on to try for you first) just loaded the site fine for me, in Opera, Firefox and IE7/8

Which IE are you using on those PCs?

Too many variable PCs with likely different software on to narrrow the cause to one thing, but check the PCs to see if a common application is installed, could be Firewall, AV, Toolbar etc and disable to test.

If the same site is used on all the PCs alot then possible the DNS cache has a bad entry in it, close all browser windows, and try flushing the DNSCache, open and CMD (Command prompt) and type ipconfig /flushdns *may need to do this a few times, then try again.

Could you also do a tracert on that site, again at a CMD prompt, type tracert dogpile.com just want to see if you have any issues at a particular hop (use the CODE tag the icon like a speach bubble next the the mountian icon to post the tracert result as it tends to line it up ok)

Pop this into the Address Bar of IE http://67.63.50.146

    Halo;
Thanks, I really appreciate the tips and will try them out as soon as I get a little time (We are getting ready for Vancouvers Santa Claus Parade this weekend).

I'm using IE 6.0 since the newer versions won't support Win 98

By the way what is this http://67.63.50.146 supposed to do? Does it just go into the address bar anytime or do I have to be in a specific program?
    Thanks

If you put 67.63.50.146 into your address bar, it should take you to the dogpile search page.

Ok, I finally got a few minutes to try all the tips from Halo and Plodr.
I tried inserting http://67.63.50.146 same result - Gateway Timeout
I Installed Opera and tried the same number and also dogpile.com written out - same result - Gateway Timeout
I tried flushing the DNS Cache - don't know if it worked - I did it from the DOS prompt (when I type CMD in the run box I just get that Microsoft does not recognize the command). Anyway after hitting "Enter" I get a whole bunch of add-on options for ipconfig/flushdns - I didn't know what most of them were so I just picked /all - like I said I don't know if it did anything.
I also tried the tracert dogpile.com from the DOS prompt and got a whole page of stuff ending with 67.63.50.146 but I didn't know what else to do with it or how to let you see it.
So, at this rate I don't seem to be any further ahead. Any more ideas?
Anyway, thanks for everything so far. I am sincerly appreciative of all your time and knowledge. Thanks

I thought it was the ISP or the router or even a host file entry but since 4 computers (if we include your friend) all using different ISPs can't get on, all those ideas are wrong.

I would have blamed it on a windows update but two of the computers run 98SE so we can scratch that idea.

Did you update any software (I'm thinking along the lines of a firewall, an antivirus or a real time malware detector)? Other than that I'm stumped.

Nothing was updated that hasn't been done dozens of times before. A few items were added but Dogpile had already stopped bein accessible at that point. And none of the computers were updated with the same items at the same time.

For some reason the government Network computers NOW do access Dogpile but I have no way of talking to their tech guy to know what he might have done. I'm not sure if heis even in Vancouver.

Ah well! Guess I'll just have to resign myself to using Yahoo or Google. :cry

Thanks for all your great suggestions. Very much appreciated.

    Cody
