Just how long does "Searching for installation updates" take while Step 1 is Collecting information?
Also I forgot to disable 3rd party AV & firewall. Should I leave things alone and just wait?

    Thanks

It might take a couple of hours.

Are you collecting all of the updates for windows 7.

dr.moriarty, Repairing Windows 7 takes longer than re-installing. And don't worry about the 3rd party AV & Firewall.

    *Here's the problem that remains:
System has SSD for programs and SSHD for data.
There are 27 shortcut/file/folder icons showing on the Desktop with all open windows minimized ....but using Windows Explorer to navigate to > C:\Users\username\Desktop - only a text file(thread reply template) and the "tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio" zip file shows. *However, these two file are NOT on the desktop I see. How do I correct this?

    The other location is C:\Users\Public\Desktop.

    Nope, it's not found there.

In Windows 7 with 1 user account, the only locations for Desktop items are C:\Users\Public\Desktop & C:\Users\username\Desktop - excluding the 5 Windows shortcuts that can be added via Personalize.

Unless I'm misunderstanding the problem.
What locations show when you look at the Properties of the Desktop items you see?

Eldon, there is no "C:\Users\Public\Desktop" folder found when using Windows Explorer.
As expected, the program icons point to C:\ (SSD) and data folder shortcuts point to E:\My Documents, the data drive.

I can't get my head around this one.
Why don't you move the 2 text & zip files to the desktop you see?

    And...

Maybe these snips will make it easier.

Just to re-state, when using Windows Explorer ->(1) C:\Users\myname only shows those 2 files. (2) C:\Users\Public -> does not show a Desktop folder.

Drag the 2 files in image 2 to the Desktop folder in image 1.

Are you saying to just combine the 2 Users Accounts\Desktop into 1...the C:\Users\Public?

No. Just move the shortcuts/files/folders from one user to the other. I have been doing it since Windows XP to keep things organized.
BTW This is my personal folder

I'm still trying to correct what has happened to all of these shortcut icons and folders that are not shown on C:\Users\myusername\Desktop.

Have you gone into the shortcut Properties, and browsed for the icon?

Also, are some of those stand alone executables or HTML pages?

The shortcuts properties point to C:\Users\Public\Desktop as their location and there are 2 PaleMoon HTML pages... no executables.

EDIT: Copied shortcuts and folders into \username\Desktop folder, now seen when using Windows Explorer. And now added to "Favorites". Seems okay after a couple of re-boots and navigating about.

Tweaking.com - Windows Repair can repair the icons, or you can just delete the file 'IconCache', restart and Windows will rebuild it.

:p If only it had been that easy...I had ran it twice, in Safe Mode even.

    *Thanks for the help.
