1st off i'd like to say what a great site this is and its a wonderful thing that u guys are doing voluntarily :).

i'm sorry for posting this here without fully completing all the steps but i didn't see any other part of the forum where i think it would have been better placed :-o . i'm currently doing the READ & RUN ME FIRST and i am on the section of the RootRepeal, it has been scanning for at least 6hrs and has been scanning C:\Windows\winsxs\ for a long time and i was just wondering if that was normal?

    Many thanks,
    AL

    Welcome to MajorGeeks, ANiMEL0VER

I suggest that you stop and close RootRepeal - then move on to the other steps. We have other rootkit detectors that we can use, if need be.

Thank you for the warm welcome Dr M.

I quit the RootRepeal as u requested and it hung at "Stopping" for quite a while so then i ended the process using the task manager. I then tried to run MGTools and it did not run. I then navigated to the \MGTools folder on my boot drive, i then located the GetLogs.bat file which i right clicked and chose Run As Administrator...a command prompt box (im assuming) popped up and closed in a nanosecond. No other pop up windows appeared, no scans took place...i even checked to see if the MGlogs.zip was created and there wasnt any. Attached below are the logs of the processes i did manage to complete. Hopefully we can figure out what's going on.

    Many thanks,
    AL

    Did you try:
    1) running MGTools.exe in "Safe Mode"?
    2) Have you tried renaming it to "123.com" to see if it would run?
    3) Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.

cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

    Attach the logs if successful.

i did not do the 1st two steps due to the fact that i didn't see them in the debugging section of if MGTools doesn't run in vista...possibly an oversight on my part :-o. i did however do step 3 and after show new, a newfiles.txt document has appeared and im not sure if i should save that document or just leave it there and do the GetRunKey. Any help on this would be appreciated.

Ok well hopefully the mods don't allow a previous post i sent through so it won't seem like i'm bumping the thread...figured out that the newfiles.txt automatically saved...ahhh i wish i knew binary :-D

    Hello, ANiMELOVER

*Other than the tools our guide instructed you to save there, I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only shortcut links. [ C:\Users\SainT\Desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

    Step 1:
Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text inside of the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 2:
Delete all files and subfolders in the below folders except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    Let's try again using MGTools

    Step 3:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Windows 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * If it still won't run correctly:
Please download OTL by OldTimer, saving it to your desktop:
    • Close all open windows on the Task Bar. Double-click the OTL icon to start the program and let it run uninterrupted.
    • When the windows appears, underneath Output at the top - change it to Minimal Output.
    • Under the Standard Registry box, change it to All.
    • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
    • Now click the Run Scan button at Top left and let the program run - the scan may take 5-10 minutes.
    • Do not TOUCH your keyboard until the scan completes!
      • It will produce two (2) logs on your desktop, one will pop up called OTL.txt and the other - Extras.txt. These logs are saved normally directly under your C:/ directory.
      • Now exit Notepad.
      • Exit OTL by clicking the [X] at top right.

    Attach these to your reply-
    • OTListIt.txt
    • Extras.txt

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"

Ok so i ran the steps:

Conbofix wanted to update, i let it and then it scanned and rebooted my computer. After the restart, while it was getting the logs, a windows installer appreared and install hp psc 2100 series printer software (which i no longer use).

Went to Step 2 but when i got to the C:\WINDOWS\temp folder, there was nothing in it and when i tried to access the C:\Documents and Setting\Saint\Local Setting\TEMP i received an error message saying the Documents and Settings folder is not accessible and my access has been denied.

Ran the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file and the file is attached.

Thanks again for the help Dr .M

You still have some executables on this desktop that should not be there:
    C:\Users\SainT\desktop

*I see nothing malware related remaining in your logs. How is your pc running?

the only exe files i have on the desktop are the files i downloaded in the Read and Run me first...the only other exe file i have is the AVG uninstaller that i used to uninstall AVG in order to run combofix. Sometimes when i mistype a URL address my comp take me to some random page other than that my pc is running fine. i ran a scan with advanced system care and during the scan i saw:

    Trojan.Win32/Agent
    Trojan.Win32/BHO
    Vundo

it was unnerving so i just wanted to be on the safe side and have those removed.

Our guide does not instruct you to save mb.exe and SUPERAntiSpyware.exe to your desktop - they don't belong there, which also lead to my comment in post#7.

    Let's run this online scanner:

    Using ESET's Online Scanner

Please attach the ESETscan.txt to your next reply.

Yes you are right, it never instructed me where to save them but it also didn't say do not save to desktop. i have a folder where i usually have all my downloads go...i just assumed for al intents and purposes since the combofix was to be saved on the desktop i'd just save them all there...my bad :-o

The ESETScan is attached and once again thank you for helping Dr .M

    Hi, ANiMELOVER

    You're very welcome!

Although the instructions does not say implicitly where to save those two -
...it is very common to save downloaded program installers to the Downloads or My Downloads directory.

:major Our cleaning is complete. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and re-enable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have re-enabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work through the below link:
