Domain Aliases

I think I'm getting tripped up on terminology. Can some explain (or point me somewhere which explains) the difference between domain aliases, parked domains, and 301 redirects. TIA.

 

It is really three different things Not relating one to the other.

1. Parked Domain.

To be included in the DNS database a Domain need a server address.

If you own a domain but using at the moment the Domain have No server address. So most Domain vendors offer parking service (usually free). What it means that their parking server address is entered into the Internet DNS as the domain server address.

It keeps you domain alive without actually having a Site.

2. Alias Domain.

A setting that point few domains to the same site.

Let say you have a Web site Mysite.com and an alias Domain might be MysiteToo.com. When you enter MySiteToo.com into the browser it will log to Mysite.com

3. 301 redirect

If you have a Site that is indexed by search engines and make a significant change in the site you might lost your previous status with the search engine.

301 redirects is a method to inform the searchbot about the relation between the old pages. and the new pages.

 

Thanks. That helps me sort things out. So how is an alias domain accomplished technically? Is that a DNS record?

 

On the Internet's DNS it usually treated as two separate domains pointing to same Hosting server once it gets to the specific Host Server the second domain would be redirected to the first.

In other words it is a Hosting service feature.
