Hi, I'm having a problem joining any of my computers to my Domain controller.

    Detail are this.
I share an internet connection with the guy next door, he is on sky and gets his IP configuration dynamically from the ISP. I like to use servers to learn more about networking and installed A first Domain Controller with A/D and dns but no dchp as he needs his router to do this for him. In short he kept getting kicked off his Xbox and was getting game rage with me so to sort it out I plug in a very long ethernet cable to his router ran it through to my room and made myself a new network in here by configuring a new router on a different Network address.

    He is on standard 192.168.0.*
    Im on 192.168.10.*

It worked great he no longer wants to kill me.

i have dell desktop (DC)(AD) 192.168.0.103 configured to see itself as DNS server
IPCONFIG tells me all is set up ok. I get internet fine and I can ping either name or IP address of any computer on network fine too.
I have internet for all machines too.

I have also two Virtual machines running on My Dell laptop one XP, one Win 7
Both of these are configured Dynamically and work fine.
I have left his router giving DCHP for his network and mine doing the same for mine, My router( Dlink Broadband) is also set to give IP for my network.

When I try to join any Computers to the domain DNS fails to resolve and find the DC
I have tried changing the settings in my router, It has a reservation on the Sky router of 192.168.0.3 I have set the primary DNS of my Dlink to My DNS of 192.168.0.103 and its secondary to the sky router.

When i check IPCONFIG on my machines the dns comes up as 192.168.10.1 My Default Gateway..
If I set my IP configuration on the machine to Static with DNS as my DNS Server then I lose internet.
The DC is set to Static with DNS set as itself and it has internet fine.

Ok I'v gone on long enough, Any Ideas Guys, Any more info required?
    Let me know....:confused

I'm pretty sure what's happening is when you attempt to join to the domain the client is looking to DNS for records for any domain controllers, but the router (acting DNS server) does not have those records for your domain controller and is instead treating your DC like a standard client.

As you have changed to a different subnet you should be able to setup DNS for Windows Server using the DC for your primary DNS and the router for secondary DNS (internet access).

When you setup your static IP did you specify the router as your default gateway?

    Thanks for the reply :0/

I re-installed the Domain controller many days after i created the new network.

I gave it a static address and yes i gave it the routers address for the defauly gateway.

I set up Active Directory and DNS on it.

This is not the first time i have used 2003 by a long shot, but it is the first time I have tried it using two routers both of which are assigning IP's on their respective networks.

Maybe i got the dns wrong this time? or is it maybe the router I wonder?
If I turned on DHCP on DC I guess that would then take over the role of giving out the dns info to the clients.

Its bound to be some tiny mistake I made it always is eh?

Is it possible to reinstall DNS on the AD without demoting it?

If not I dont have an awful lot on The AD yet and suppose i could go the whole route and start again, how do I stop the Router acting as DNS i have tried changing its settings so it points to the DC/DNS but that did not seem to work.

    Ok I'm burbling on again

    :cool

Think I may have solved my own problem :-D

I realised that NAT is enabled on the Dlink router which will be interfering with the DNS.

Its good to talk.............................to yourself rolleyes

I talk to myself all the time, if it helps fix the problem there is nothing wrong with it. ;)

I am responding to your invitation to participate in this thread. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with DNS servers.

I would have PM'd you but you don't yet have access to the boards PM system.
