I’m trying to join LapTop HP DV6000 (Win XP Pro) under Domain, but I’m having problems. I have done this before , so I’m kind of familiar but with this one I cant.
I’m not even able to see under ‘user accounts’ on which domain they are assigned ( I have that friendlier look for User Management and not under Domain control look)
Also when I’m restarting the system or making a log-off, on "Welcome to Windows “ window I can see only the lines for Username and Password, and Under "Options > >" there is no additional line : "Log on to: ", ( where I can select domain)
    Any thoughts
    Thanks
    Daniela

I've got a trick that will be your best friend in this case. Try this:

    1. Hit windows key + r (or click Start --> Run)
    2. Type 'control userpasswords2' (without the quotes)
    3. Hit enter (Or click 'OK')

The classic user accounts dialog will now appear! Here, you should be able to see users and the domain they are associated with. Since this machine currently isn't on a domain, you get the XP interface by default, and all of your users will be on the local computer domain. To enable the classic logon prompt, please do the following:

    1. On the 'User Accounts' dialog, select the 'Advanced' tab
    2. Under 'Secure Logon' check the box next to 'Require Users to Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete'
    3. Apply your settings.

Now, when windows loads, you will see the classic logon prompt. You can also call this up at the XP Welcome screen simply by pressing ctrl+alt+delete twice.

Now, onto the problems joining the domain... can you please outline the steps you are taking to do this, and what is preventing you from completing it successfully?

My Computer Properties, Computer Name--> Network ID--> '...my computer using domain...' and the troubles start :)

You won't see domain memberships listed until the computer is on a domain. Users are assumed to be on a domain with a name that matches the name of the computer.

And you're taking steps that SHOULD work...

So, following the Network ID wizard prompts, we've selected 'My Computer Is on a network', and then we've selected 'This Network uses a domain' (or whatever messages those are - I can't recall them exactly)...so next, you should be prompted for a user name and password for someone with rights to join a computer to the domain....do you not get this prompt? An error message? What?

yes, that way, ten I'm usinf user name and passoord with administrative right on domain that I want to join. After I'm prompt " Windows cannot find an account for your computer on the 'xxxxxxxx' domain

    Computer Name :
    Computer Domain

So here I want to enter name of the LapTop, and I was looking for which domain to enter ????

That would be the name of the domain you're joining...
You'd have to ask the domain administrator for that...

You have the domain administrator username and password, but you don't know the name of the domain?

Sorry, but something isn't adding up to me here... do you actually have a domain to join? This is usually only done in a business setting...

I have Domain Name , I just put xxxxxxx instead of domain name that I'm using it...

If you put xxxxx in for domain name, you're computer will try to contact the domain controller of domain xxxxx, which doesn't exist.

This has to be the REAL domain name of the domain on your network. Do you have a Windows server on your network running a domain?

Yes I have Windows Server NT, But I'm using xxxxxx just for this post. Real domain name is CHIDWTN....

    Okay, I'm following you now

Enter the name of the domain in that prompt...it should create a computer account in that domain if it doesn't already exist. (IIRC - been awhile since I've played on an NT domain)

I already did that. This was strange too because under ‘My Network Places’ I’m not able to see 'Entire network' or 'microsoft Networl' or something else except’ View Workgroup Computers’

I have triied and this one. I'm prompt 'A domain controler for the domain CHIDWTN couldnot be contacted'
domain name is spelled corecttly. Like I said this is not my first time to join under Domain this way, but now I'm not able to do it...
any help is more than wellcome...

Also, can you ping the server? Do you have an IP?

Yes it does. I'm able to browse Internet....

I think something is wrong with DNS. I'm not able to ping the server by his name, but I'm able to ping by it's IP.
I'm using DNS given from my ISP. (Same settings like all others Win XP machines under the same Domain)

I figured it out. I was NORTON FIREWALL. I just turn it off and everything was perfect.
