i bought some dell stuff from a friend and the power supply isnt cutting it for me and i recently went to buy a better and more powerful one and when i went one of the workers at the store told me not to do it cuz it might blow the motherboard.....Is this true?

Blow it? I don't think so, but being as it's a "Dell", the Power Supply is most likely proprietary. Meaning it's an exclusive part to Dell computers.

Also meaning a good ps like an Enermax or Antec etc. probably won't fit.

well its not exactly in a dell case so i could fit a different power supply in the case

Then I don't see why, as long as it's compatible.
