I'm pretty embarrassed to ask this question being that everyone here really knows what they are talking about when it comes to computers.

I dont really know the first thing about them other than how to surf the web. Technically, I know nothing.

I downloaded IEPV to my computer from this site. It stored it on my C drive. Ok, dont roll your eyes please, put I dont understand what I am supposed to do with it from there. It is saying to copy it to a like folder (??) and then run it. Run it...I dont even see an option where to do that...

Can, or better yet, will, one of you help me out with this?

    Thank you in advance.

the file is an executable..so simply double clicking on it will fire it up and then it should install by default to its own folder

It downloaded to the C drive and when I open up the folder that is named IE Passview, there are 5 files in it. None have "exe" attached to the end of them so I dont know what it is that I am supposed to run.

Use the one that has the IE (blue "e") icon with the key in the center.

    *****
To see extensions (like .exe) on filenames open Windows explorer window go to Tools>Folder Options> on the View tab uncheck the box "Hide extensions for known filetypes"

First, thanks to all of you for helping me out with this.

Now, I am getting a message saying that windows cant open the folder. Access to the compressed zipped folder is denied.

    ??????????? HELP please!

If you have suggestions, like "turn off this or that", please be specific as to where it is I would do it...I wasnt kidding when I said I dont know how to nagivate around a computer. ;)

If we're talking about this program: http://www.majorgeeks.com/IE_PassView_d5254.html I just downloaded it and it is a setup file, not a zip file. So I installed it. It is actually a self extracing zip file type of thing but it installs by default to C:\Program Files\IE PassView. If you click Start > All Programs you will see IE PassView in the list of installed programs. If you pause the mouse on it, you'll see 4 things listed in this order: IE PassView, IE PassView Help, Read Me, Uninstall. Click on the first item in the list. That's it. Alternatively, you can go to C:\Program Files\IE PassView and double click the blue E with the little purple key on it.

NOTE: this program lit up all my antivirus programs due to the nature of what it does; it digs for passwords which is virus like behavior so it's understandable. I had to temporarily turn off AntiVir, MalwareBytes, and BOclean in order to even unzip/install IE PassView. Maybe your antivirus/firewall/ antispyware programs are interfering with it...

My apologizes. I got the IE PassView to run, but it is only showing user names, not all passwords. Only 2 of them. After reading more on this site, I downloaded PSPV.zip (Protected Storage PassView) and it did download as a zip file. Now, if there is something that I should have done first to unzip it, I dont know...

ANyhow, I am sure that the information I just gave you makes some kind of difference. I'm sorry.

IEPV only shows passwords for entering websites which are stored in Internet Explorer. Is this the browser you use and the type of passwords you are looking to retrieve?

Right click the .zip file and select Extract All. Then click Next a few times and after a bit you'll be in the PSPV unzipped folder...

Yes, Internet Explorer is the browser we use. I am looking to retrieve usernames and passwords of my juvenile aged son's accounts. Just for the record, lol, I have a very good reason to feel I need to do this. I dont like doing it, but I believe he is putting himself at risk...enough said.

I am specifically looking for his Yahoo account.

If someone knows of an easier way for me to do this, can you please let me know? This is frustrating enough.

There are a lot of websites that are implementing ways of not allowing the browser to save passwords when logging in. Most banking websites, and some free email websites, are included. I believe Yahoo! has this implementation in effect as well.

If you're looking to get passwords entered on your computer, you might want to use keylogging software (MG has several in the downloads section).

    Hi

What you could try and from the same developers as the above applications is their app for finding Yahoo/MSN etc messenger passwords and user names, I'm not going daft in this thought as many users who have Instant Messengers also use their same user pass as they do for email accounts with same providers.

What Windows version are you using?

Also does this PC have multiple user accounts or just one account everyone uses? as you will likely have to run these applications in the account you wish to recover the user/password.

    Thank you for your reply.....

I tried the software that you suggested and got nothing. It didnt even bring up my IM account information.

Using Vista Home Premium, or so it says..lol

and I am not sure how to answer the mutiple user question. Its only me and my son and we really just plugged the PC in when we got it and started surfing and emailing. Is so frustrating that I dont know what some of you kind folks mean!

I'm truly at a loss. I dont know what else to do.

multiple user means when you cut the machine on and the windows screen appears do you get a choice to pick the user who logs on it may have your name or administrator . if it has only one option to click on then you have one user on the account.
Also i think if the save password option is not selected when you log into the account then the password is not saved by IE. Someone mention a key logger program this may be your best option.

Thanks for explaining that to me. No, no mutiple users.

I will try the keylogger suggestion. Any suggestions as to which one is a good choice?

I really appreciate all of the help you guys are giving me. Thank you!
