There are always people who will fall for it ;) I cannot believe the gullibilty of some people when it comes to these scam emails saying they have won a million cash LOL
Or the junk mail through the post giving you a scratchcard for free - and you are guaranteed a prize!! Just call this number and to claim your prize. The call is charged at £2.50 per minute and the minimum call time is 8 minutes etc etc

Don't come across these little suckers...even if I did, I wouldn't bother clicking on them;)

Given they stated "genuine emeralds" then it appears to be blatantly fraudulent.

"Emerald stone" or "emerald" itself when stated simply is a gem stone (which can vary in quality and worth, but still a gem stone). Adding the word "genuine" confirms it as being a gem stone. And that is, what "a reasonable person" would believe and not assume it to be. So then receipt of anything that is not a genuine gem stone can be considered a scam.

Unless any other description was included such as "looks like", then a fact is being stated...so legit...ie not a real emerald stone, but "looks like", so person has been warned. (Amazing how many people actually don't go past reading the word "genuine" in this warning example.)

Also, if there is a "Disclaimer" as to authenticity in the tiny, little fine print, then that can be a "loophole".

Scams are sometimes hard to track when reported to legal authorities because these scammers know how to cover their tracks...but sometimes they are not as smart as they think and can get roped in by authorities.

I equate those who click on stuff like that with those who post the latest "ohmygod forward this to 100 people because it's so scary true we're all going to die right now if you don't" emails. You know, like the one that says cell phone companies are going to sell your number to the highest bidder unless you register it on some website made completely out of hooey?

I also tend to look at it as the cyber version of natural selection. Those who are smart enough survive, those who are not crash and burn. :D

Sounds like scam and not something to get away with because stating simply "emeralds" refers to gem stones, which a reasonable person would expect.

If no other description or fine print ("loopholes" per my previous post), then such scammers should be referred to appropriate authorities. Here we have a commission for consumers that follow upon such scammers.

Bazza, if you get that sort of poo coming up on your pooter, then it is not very secure. Only if you go to nasty porn sites or the like, do you get this sort of thing. Otherwise any decent freebie, easily downloadable on this excellen site, should squash them immediately.

    Er, no.

There are plenty of sites with popups still, they certainly don't need to be porn.

I read an interesting article in Maxim about popups. I man decided to take some time and see if they were legit or not. He did all the little trials that the popups say you have to do in order to get whatever it is they're offering and he canceled all the services when their trail was up. It cost him about $250 out of his own pocket and he wound up with like $3500 dollars worth of stuff. It makes me curious now to see if this is true. But in reality I do hate them with a passion. I especially hate those ones that open in like a new window and start talking to you saying, "Congratulations! You have won....." it takes me forever to find where that's coming from!

Yes! I use Firefox's inbuilt popup blocker and ABP, and haven't seen a pop-up since, even where I used to before installing ABP.

It's now part of my standard install for my clients.
