Doom 3 threads?

Haven't seen but a few in here.......surprising! 4 years in development....the waiting....the buildup.....the preorder campaign.....the speculation.... Personally I had mixed feelings. My rig isn't 'top-end' , by far, but I haven't had any probs with the game....running high detail @ 1024x768 w/2x anti-alias. I've heard the game looks good at 640x480, but I haven't tried that, yet. Anyway...I just get a huge kick from thinking back on all of the speculation over the past year.....the "I GOTTA UPGRADE TO PLAY" screams! Everyone was so concerned with hardware specs. I'm sure some people couldn't sleep nights wondering which bills might not get paid that month in order to afford the $400 video card upgrade and $250 cpu upgrade . I figured all along they'd make the game highly scalable and playable across a wide variety of machines. It wouldn't have made good business sense to release the game to the 'priveledged' few with cutting edge hardware! Anyway, my hat is off to them for pulling it off. I am quite happy with how it performs. In a few nights, I'll be stopping by my brothers house to see how his magic box is handling it. He has much the same rig as me (I built it for him ) except w/ a 2000+ and an FX 5200 (non-ultra). Back to the 'mixed' feeling part.....While graphics, controls, and overall feel are on target....I really think that maybe (with all the development time....) that they'd have rolled out with something 'new'. I realize the technology and engine is new.....I also realize that they made the decision to stay 'true' to the Doom series (and are re-hashing the original storyline), but gameplay wise.... I sort of felt cheated? This a game I've played years back on a 486DX-2......and still is pretty much the same game? I've heard and read about tons of features that were canned and game options that never made the final cut. Carmack more or less kept the k.i.s.s. (keep it simple, stupid) mentality with the game. Not a bad a thing...true to the genre....a kick to play...the dark atmosphere they created is great...etc.etc. However, I'm hoping Half Life 2 one-ups Id with not only the eye-candy.....but game play that feels like an experience we have't had before........
