I got the windows restore virus from a coworker and had to uninstall symantec. When I restarted, it said my hal.dll file was missing. I copied it from my xp cd to the system32 file. However, every time I restart, it goes to hal.dll missing problem. All I want is my outlook.pst file copied to another computer and then reinstall XP. I tried to access my documents and settings directory, but it said access is denied. I know that the directory is c:\docume~1, but no access. How do I get access to this directory?
    thanks

Because DOS does not recognize NTFS, you can download a small linux distro like Puppy, burn the iso with ImgBurn, and boot the LiveCD. Plug in a flash drive and copy the file.

my friend had a usb with linux on it and we were able to get the files off the laptop. I copied the outlook.pst file to another computer to see if I could open it. I I import the outlook.pst file, it looks like it is copying all the emails/contacts/calendar, but when it is done, there is no email in the inbox. The file is not a read only file. what am I doing wrong?

Why not try a Windows over Windows repair? Put the XP CD in skip the first promt for repair, it *should* detect a previuos Windows install and give you the repair option. That should get it working agin. Then you can copy off what you need and if you still need to reformat and reinstall.

Did you use the procedure shown in this link under import pst file. Also, you may have picked the wrong pst file. Default location is
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_id\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

    http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm

If you did it through the wizard, try the manual method shown.

You might want to try importing into Outlook express.

On the File menu, select Import
Select Import from another program or file
    Select the pst file

If both of these fail then you can do what foogoo suggests and do a Windows over Windows repair. You can also try to restore the Hal file as outlined here.
