DOS Problems

Hi,

I,m trying to do my dos homework, I,m in cmd running virtual dos.

I,m working away when my screen goes back into windows without any warning sometimes an hour goes by sometimes only a minute before it returns to windows.
The dos window is on the task bar, at other times its totally gone.

Is it a setting or is my cpu on the way out?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
