Double error messages

Ive had this problem before on Folders containing downloaded files but last night whenever I right-clicked on a folder then clicked on "sharing and security" I got, first, the "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" message followed promptly by a similar message about Dr Watson debug and then everything froze.
This happened on 'My Videos' and 'HJT'.The only way to get out of it was to hold in the power button to shut the PC off.
Have I got corrupted OS files?

Too many possibilities ....could be hardware, software or virus.....you could first try doing :
Start / run / type "sfc /scannow" without qoutes and have your xp disc ready to insert.

If that doesn't help, a repair install would get you back, but then you would be advised to go directly to the malware section and ensure you aren't bugged.

Hi Tim,
Sorry I took so long to get back but I dont have an ISP at the moment.Anyway I scanned my PC with my AV and Anti-spyware which came up clean and checked an HJT log.Im thinking it could be something to do with the fact I had tried that new MSN Desktop Search but removed it thus corrupting something.
So I followed the other link and printed it out.Problem is at some point I have to type in the XP product key which I dont have.Ive got a Compaq which has the recovery partition.I have made the Recovery DVD and the Recovery Tools CD Which would be best to use?)
Can I get round the key part?
