Double listings in Control Panel

XP Pro SP2. Attached is a screen shot of part of the Control Panel with the doubled items highlighted in red. I did some research and found a reg key that lists which items are shown in the control panel. I compared this key against a 'normal' registry and found no differences. So, whose got an idea on this one???

(it doesn't matter which of the doubled items I click on; both work normally; for example, if I click on either of the "Mouse" selections, both open up the window for the mouse settings)

 

I have noticed that when I do a system restore, often I end up with several doubled files in program files but I have never seen it in control panel. Typical doubled entries would be in my Zone Alarm folder or the ATI/NVIDIA folder directly under C: if I restored to older graphics drivers. Windows likes to keep copies of certain newer files when you back track but they go away if you undo and restore forward again.

Try switching to catagory view and then back again, or maybe switch to catagory view, resart the pc and then switch back to classic view to see what happens.

 

I already tried all of the above before I posted I also performed a safe OS reload before I posted, and that made no difference.

You could have duplicate .cpl (control panel) files in system32.
