I'm using AVG anti-virus freeware and they have a new version. Should I uninstall the older version first and the install the new version 8.0 or is there and update that can be installed?

    Thanks

    Hi Java

Yes personally I would uninstall older version and run CCleaner to clear all old temps and resgistry entries, then install newer version.

However I will throw something into the pot to think about, some users upgrading to AVG8 are having issues with it ( usual thing with new applications many will be ok with the new upgrade, but this one seems to be affecting more than normal ), speed and various errors, so also if it causes issues for you think of a possible change to an alternate AV.

Thanks Halo, glad I had sense enough to check it out. Gonna stay with my current version.

    Hi Java

At some point AVG7.5 will have no updates to definition files, so an upgrade or alternative will be only way forward for protection, however by that time AVG8 maybe more stable.

    Just a note.
Although there have been several people who have reported having issues with AVG 8.0, as Halo mentions many others have not.
The original date given by AVG that they were going to shut down their download support for 7.5 has been extended because of these issues.
I believe they are now saying that they will continue to update 7.5 until December (not positive of the date, I'm going strictly from memory here).
In any case when you do (if you do) update to 8.0, the installer will autromatically uninstall 7.5 first. At least that has been the case in the 7 computers that are in my care.
(None of which has had any problems with 8.0.)

31st December 2008 is the last day. This has been posted in the AVG free forums since the beginning of May. Apparently the sales department sends out scare tactics emails telling people support will end at the end of May and the latest email sent out is either the end of June or mid-July support/updates will stop. Those dates are wrong. The correct date is 31 Dec. 2008.
