I recently bought a computer for my son that came with the xp64 pro system.
After using and cussing it since graduation, he's decided that it is more than abit unstable for what he need to use it for and would like to install the XP pro He was given at school.
I'm assuming he wass given the full install disk of xp pro (and not just an upgrade version, but I could be wrong - haven't seen an upgrade disk, does it state that on the disk?)
When placing the disk in and booting to it, it seems (we're doing this long distance over the phone) to be tryin to install a duel boot system. I'm pretty sure this is NOT what we want to do.
I know I'm being vague, but since I can't really see what the computer is saying to him, I'm going with impressions.
How do I downgrade from xp64 to xp pro? Is a reformat required? Or is there a way to "overwrite" xp64 with xp pro?
Any detailed directions you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
LOL I know - go ahead, ask away

put the disk in and restart the computer. it should boot from the CD and run u through a few things until you get to the dirk partitioning screen. There you can choose to format (erase) the drive and replace the OS -OR- install on free space. If you dont want 2 operating systems then choose to format the drive. Just to make sure u know it WILL erase EVERYTHING on the hard drive so back up anything you need onto disks or another hard drive.

I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same thing, but just in case...
when the CD is installed, and I get to the partition part it says there are (2?)
If the main partition option is selected, a warning pops up saying it is not recommended to run 2 OS from same partition. The 2nd partition has unformatted 8mbs. (I'm assuming not enough to install an OS in any case, but we REALLY don't want 2 OSes to begin with. Format the partition is NOT an option. There is not a way to just install xp "over" xp64?
If not, and a reformat is necessary, could you please remind me (it's been a long time) of the reformat command that will keep the installed drivers?
format c:/sys? or something like that? Will this kind of format interfer with removing unwanted xp64 ... um .. issues?
This wipes out everything, meaning back up of important data is mandatory or lost right?
    thanks for any help -
    Noel

Delete the largest partition, it will be d,enter L, enter. format. I dont think you will want to keep any of the 64 driver, yes everything will be gone. ed

You format the partition and everything is gone so back it up.

Your 64 bit drivers will not work with a 32 bit OS. There is no point in keeping them. You will need to install 32 bit drivers anyway.

No sadly that option is not available as XP64 has a different set of core system files than XP pro which is 32bit, as you have found out if you goto install XP pro over XP64 it will result in a dual boot PC ( 2 OSs installed )

Only way as mentioned earlier is to format the Hard Drive and clean install XP Pro, BUT do backup all important files, documents, IE favorites, Emails, pictures etc before formatting as you wont get them back.

Then enter your Bios and change the First boot device to CDROM > save and exit the bios, pop the XP CD in and follow the below ( with pictures guide ) DO take note of section 5 and 6 which are the areas you will need to delete the XP64 partition then re-format it and continue the install process
