Interesting artical I have just been reading on Download Accelerators, while I did think that they may speed up the downloading of a large file by splitting it into multiple parts I didnt think the speed advantage was a good as the apps report, when you actually factor in taking note of the real time ( via a clock ) you started and finished a download, they looked similar-ish, I was a little suprised to see the difference between windows own DL vs a DL manager.

I really only use a DL manager for its ability to resume a broken DL... so the speed aspect wasnt always a major point for me anyway ( essential to have an optio to resume broken downloads especially for users of DUN/Dial-Up IMO )

oh yeah onto the test review "Download Accelerators : Do They Actually Work???" @ Overclockers

May have been a fuller test by using a few other apps as in the freebies ( Download Express, Leechget, Flashget etc ) and also the inbuilt downloaders in Firefox ( with extentions as in Download it All ) and Opera?

But an interesting question anyhow... anyone with other personal test results on this subject?

*Using Windows Standard dl'd rate is 72kbps to 80kbps
*Using a P2P program (when at that time i dont know DAP and others same prog) my dl'd rate is 72kbps to 80kbps
*Using DAP (latest version) dl'd rate is 72kbps to 80kbps
*Using torrent dl'd rate is 72kbps to 80kbps

    in my case nothing change
since that time that i noticed nothing increase from using DAP i take out in my pc

I don't have broadband & have a fairly outdated system an IBM T22, with 20gig hard drive over 85% full & 256 ram, but I do download a lot of legal music. A little while ago, over a month or so, I tried out around 10 different download managers.

Download Accelorator (free trial) which is said to be the most popular download manager came in 3rd in my opinion, the 2 best download manager I found were both freeware, 1st, Free Download Manager & close 2nd, Fresh Download Manager. I did not try the freeware version of Download Accelorator as I gather it's full of Spyware.

Do they speed downloads up, some do very slightly, but certainly not the 500% I've heard claims about & one whose name escapes me a french Open Source download manager reduced my speeds to 20% of the speed I get with Free Download Manager.

Personally I found installing a new anti malware product Ewido, which becomes a freeware version after 14 day free trial, the thing which most significantally increased my download speeds, previously I was using Lavasoft, Spotbot & A2 squared.

No formal 'test results', but from personal usage I feel download accelerators, as well as memory managers, are a bunch of hooey.

I must say that the “Download Accelerators/Managers” I have tried have actually slowed down my downloads including Firetune extension for FF, but then I use Tweakmaster from Hagel Technologies and that does a fair job of tweaking my DSL connection, which the DLM’s seem to negate in my case anyways. TM also comes with a pop-up meter called DU Meter to show internet activity, which has saved my bacon a few times that I had nasties wanting out, also shows my DL & UL speeds. My FreeMem Pro Memory Manager works fair as well, though I must say that it is most notable on start-up, hard to notice otherwise unless running multiple apps. Now Memory Defrager’s are a real joke in my opinion FREE or not. :)

From what I have read, and experienced, Downloader Accelerators work better in W98 than in XP (if at all).
Like Halo, I use a downloading program for the re-start facility.

    @BCGray, and star17@

FreeRam XP Pro ( free) does make a difference in my XP Pro with SP2.
It frees up RAM instantly, that MS XP never seems to get around to doing, IMHO of course.

Despite the name it is listed as working on all Win OS' es

Yup I use free ram xp pro just before lauching an app from the desktop, especially oblivion

Download accellerators are baloney, download managers are great my favourite is getright, theres no way the info is gonna come down the pipe faster than your service provider allows, where download managers shine are when the server has allocated you an amount of bandwidth thats under your broadband speed and the download can be segmented "request two file downloads from the same server" Some people are Idiots and think 50 segments will makes their connection faster, most I ever use is four,90% of the time just two

I'll admit i'm not sure how some servers work,I know alot of them average out all the connections to the max bandwidth the server has available,it makes sense then if you have two bandwidth allocations within that average your download speed will be double, morally is this right? Your taking away bandwidth from other users, like taking 10000 pennies from 10000 people, well I all I can say is I sleep OK :)

Resume is another great feature,if you become getright proficienardo like me :D you can also start using the fullpotential of the download manager, prioroties your downloads, set speed limits, allocate how much bandwidth you want your downloads to take from your surfing, auto start downloading the file once your online or when you click getright, its one of those programs to me that make you wonder how you ever lived without

For me download accelrators work, mostly because i can open 10-20 simultaneous sources for the same download therefor increasing my speed. At college with a normal windows download i can achieve speeds of about 700KB/s however if i use DAP i can get speeds exceding 2300KB/s (T3 Connection) from the same site. IMO download accelrators do work, espically if you select the option to connect to x amount of sources.

I don't, and have never believed, they accelerated downloads.

I only use them for their resume feature, and a few other nifty things.

However, that's only one test, and it's certainly not definitive.

The results could be completely different on other PC's and connections.
