Hi, Just new to the site & have moved to an area where I had to buy my own satellite dish in order to receive internet service (Great White North), and if I exceed 200MMB of download info we go to a SUPER SLOW MODE...does anyone know of a program that can control download times of updates & downloads in general??
    Thanks Cap

Welcome cap, I don't know of any applications that would control your downloads. I would set all the applications you have set to 'Notify first' as in XP or turn updates off and do it manually. NetMeter is a nice traffic monitoring program, where you can see all the way from live stats to periodic reports and projections. It also has a notification control which will alert you when you hit a preset level. It's a nice and small utility which has saved me from going over my cap which costs $$$

    Hi

Following on from Augies great post I would or only could suggest net meter as he suggests and maybe use a download manager, which will allow you to halt downloads if your limits are getting close, then when your in a new monthly limit period, start them up again, these route allows you to part download files and resume them at a later date, something the inbuilt Windows downloader cannot do.

Suggestions as to download manager would be Free Download Manager but others are available here http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?id=13

Luckily Microsoft generally only issue updates once a month and if your fully upto date with current service pack then the download updates/hotfixes are generally small, if you do need a service pack then in most cases you can order them, and the cost is either or was free or for a small media and shipping cost these days, sample is XP SP3 CD http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx
