What is your favourite download manager, and why, please?
Too many choices for me to go through.
    Thanks all!

    Flashget

and why its my favorite, its now free and does not advert based as it used to be, easy to use and has many good features.

    • Uses minimal system resources for a DL manager
    • FlashGet supports HTTP,FTP,BT,MMS,RTSP and other protocols for downloads.
    • Can virus scan the downloading files, before you open them.

Why do you feel you need a download manager? I don't use one; I usually just follow a link on a web page and start the download via my web browser. What are the advantages of a download manager?

I do have an FTP client, WS_FTP installed. So, I've seen cases where I initiated a download from a web page but the download actually executed via FTP, not HTTP.

As far as scanning a downloaded file for viruses before opening the file, I believe I can do that now. I normally save a downloaded file rather than running it immediately.

Years ago I tried about 6 or 7 and noticed no advantage in speed. I'm using the default that comes with Firefox.
As far as ftp, I use ftp explorer - an oldie but it still works so I'm not throwing it out.

Flashget - does everything I require of it, and doesn't cause any problems.

Download managers are fairly much a necessity for dial-up, simply because you can resume downloads after your connection has dropped or timed out.
They also allow you to queue downloads so that you can be downloading multiple files in your sleep :zzz

Am told that, since I use Clearwire I.S.P. which is wireless between my home and the I.S.P. (similar to cell phone freq. I'm told..., I should have a download manager due to the differential in upload/download speed = am told downloads will be faster if a manager is used. All of this is beyond my scope of knowledge, so I ask those who should know.
