What's a good download manager? I want to start using one to save time downloading. There's Free Download Manager here, and Internet Download Manager which i found on CNET. Which do you think is better? Could you please suggest something.tnx:major

    Hi

I use this one all the time, JDownloader (free) continually updated also, it is Java based so do install the latest Java Runtime HERE

Other Download Managers HERE some free and some not so, but other noteables are Orbit Downloader, LeechGet.

How does a download manager save time? I've always just used a web browser (recently Firefox for Opera) to download and they seem to work fine. For example, just this morning, I downloaded the latest version of Foxit Reader, using Opera. I could see, by the download speed shown in Opera, that it was downloading as fast as my DSL service will run. So, I can't see how a download manager would be of any benefit.

Edit: perhaps I should have started a separate topic for my question?

If a user is not on highspeed internet service, or a good broadband speed then download managers can help for the reasons below.

A download manager can help as downloading from the browser can be subject at times to a disconnection with a server or your ISP, and as a Download Manager has resume fuctionality, then the download can be restarted again (some browsers and addons for browsers have this fuctionality now, but then didnt always used too).

Also you can easily queue up a large list of downloads if you wish and download them in your own time, you are not subject to downloading them immediately, I tend to do this with ISOs of linux versions and recovery app disks and also for me MSDN and Technet have a download manager for subscribers of those services for this very reason, I could be downloading 2 or 3 ISOs that could cover 10GB in size so rather than start via the browser each one and let them fend for themselves I set up in a download manager and set it to download one at a time, less likely to have data packet corruption.

Some folk like to manage downloads and some dont, its a user choice.

No Probs, try JDownloader if you are going to try one.

Firefox 4 (or Minefields nightlys I running has a basic one, that works ok), IE9 has one build in, so browser options are being added by default, but a dedicated one still works for me better.

    Hi

The increase speed thing is a bit of a misnomer and while many if not most of them deal with speed of downloads in the form of splitting the file up into equal parts, the actual speed is never going to be quicker than the speed fo your broadband or DUN, they can download a file is less time by the splitting of the parts or so it seems.

JDownloader can download via multiple connections like Orbit, but unlike Orbit is a plain looking downloader without the screen to show you the blocks downloaded, but then thats not what I wanted.

As mentioned JDownloader can extract/convert many file types including RAR, but its not going to do everything, you can add modules to it to do various tasks, but they are not going to convert the likes of MP3 or MPEG files etc as thats a different type of conversion.

Orbit is good but I have not seen it extract files, as in say ZIP, RAR etc it may have an addon to do these tasks.

But what I would suggest as its you who will be using these downloaders is to try them out and see which one you like (as well as goto the homepages and read the features lists), my taste is likely to be different thans yours in what I want my app to do.

I had already downloaded LeechGet but I get the impression it may be getting a bit outdated. It's last update and release was about two years ago and the author's website does not mention Windows 7. I have not actually tried it yet but I'm thinking I may uninstall it and try JDownloader.

On the other hand, I'm getting the impression, as alluded in this discussion, that some of the web browsers have enhanced their embedded download manager. As a test, I just downloaded two files simultaneously with Opera. I could see the download progress for both files in Opera's download view.

Still, I may try JDownloader; I'm curious about the notion that a dedicated download manager can increase the speed of downloading large files by, as I understand it, breaking the file into smaller parts and downloading more than one of those parts simultaneously.
