Hi all, my dad is running xp sp3 with comodo firewall and avast free edition, but when he tries to download anything when using firefox 3.01 he gets an error message saying he cannot access c/doc&set/downloads & he has to either change the file attributes or change location. i/we have tried to do this in ff options to no avail & even tried resetting preferences relating to download directory :)config in location bar).tried reinstalling ff with older version & updating but it only updates so far. anybody have any ideas?, hope i have given enough info.

    tnx in advance

    Hi

Has he tried to update his old Firefox version to version 4.0 HERE and then try? 3.01 is old!

If then using IE to download a file/program does that work ok?
If you boot into Safe Mode with Networking can you download ok?

--- just trying to rule out Windows or another 3rd party app as the issue with the two options above.

Is he logged into the admin account?

3.01 is a very old version of Firefox. If not ready to use version 4, he should at least be running 3.6.16.

    Hi

If all downloads and with all browsers then suspect malware and run the below, but after trying the safe mode route to check if you can download ok, as malware can cause downloads to fail.

    Hi

Thats great news but I would still run the malware guide I posted and post in our malware removal forum for some advice on any issues still left as not all automatic malware apps can clean all malware, in most cases a expert eye is needed.
