Download Problem With Microsoft Edge Browser

    Greetings

I cannot download files directly to a network share with the Microsoft Edge Browser. I can download to any local folder, but not to a network folder. The error message I get is "xxx.exe or xxx.pdf might have been moved or deleted". If I then go to the network folder, I can see the file name and partial download.

This isn't a new problem, it's been there since day one. I can download to the network just fine with Microsoft IE or Google Chrome.

I've spent hours googling and it seems to be a recognized problem, particularly with PDF files. I can't seem to find a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Now I could just use Google Chrome, but I really want to find the solution for MS Edge.

    Thanks

Seems this is a bug in edge. "Edge is perfectly capable of opening and displaying a PDF, but it blocks files on a mapped network drive while it will happily open files from a UNC path."

Thanks for the quick reply! The information you provided was about all I could find as well.

If this is a real, documented bug, I'm quite surprised it hasn't been addressed already.

Could someone please try this and confirm what I'm experiencing?

GermanOne, thanks for the suggestion. I did post my issue as you suggested. Hopefully, I'll get some feedback.

I'm still hoping someone from MajorGeeks could try to download a file directly to a network share with the Edge brower. I'm really curious if anyone else has this problem.

Just d/loaded a pdf to a share on my home network using Edge. No issues, and remarkably fast.

Earthling, Thanks for doing the testing for me. Now, your results really have me scratching my head! Just to be clear, you did download a PDF from some website, directly to the network share? No intermediate save to your PC?

Just as an example, if I try to download ccleaner from Piriform website, directly to my network share, it will always fail. I get the error message, "ccleaner.exe might have been moved or deleted". As I previously mention, everything works perfect using MS IE or Google Chrome browser.

All of the computers in my household (wired or wireless) exhibit the same problem. Also, I see the problem irregardless of what network device I'm trying to save to. It's the same with the flash drive plugged into the USB port of the router, the Ubuntu Server or NAS4Free storage.

There are several easy work around's for this problem. It's more like a puzzle that needs to be solved!

Thanks to all for your time and indulgence!

It was direct. Now I'll try your Ccleaner d/load.

This is a tough nut to crack. All I can say about my Win 10 on this laptop, which was a Win 7 upgrade, is that I've been through it with Autoruns and Process Explorer with a fine toothcomb looking for and removing anything at all that might have been inherited from Win 7. Of course, if your Win 10 is a clean install that is irrelevant.

Do you have a second or third Win 10 system, and do they exhibit the same problem? If they do then the problem is somehow related to your network router or switch, firewall maybe?

All of the computers in my household are behaving the same way. I do have a couple of extra routers, both "G" and "N'. When it's quiet around the house and I have some time, I'll give those a try.

Thanks for the tips and pointers.

I have repeated my tests on the two Win 10 computers I previously downloaded to. All tests were successful. It is not a Win 10/Edge issue.

I swapped out my newer Netgear "N" with an older D-Link "G" router. So, except for the modem, it's really a totally different network. I still have exactly the same problem. I tried changing a number of other settings and what not, but no difference.

I just have a feeling there is probably just some setting that needs changing and all will be fine.

At this point, I think I will just use Google Chrome, which works just fine.

I think the issue is either with my cable modem or my ISP (Charter). I had my son test this at his house. He has exactly the same router and basically the same network setup that I have. However, he has a dsl connection with a different ISP.

He ran the test and was able to download without a problem. At this point, I don't plan to do any further trouble shooting. So, I will just use Google Chrome, which is fine with me.

Thanks to everyone for the help!:)

That's a shame. Couple of months ago, after using and swearing by Firefox for years, I decided to give Edge trial. Never went back! On this rather underpowered laptop it runs well and compared with Chrome or FF is very light on resources and responsive.

Edge has quite a lot of bugs. The last issue I reported (in February) took months before it was fixed and still isn't rolled out. @PokeyBoy at least your issue was already confirmed by MS ... :)

I got a new laptop last spring and have been using MS Edge since then. I've tweaked Edge to my own preferences and it actually works pretty well for me. The download thing is my only real problem.

The fall update to Windows 10 should be coming soon and maybe this Edge problem will be fixed at that time.

I believe there was a recent update to Google Chrome. So, there should be a few browser options.

    Cheers
