I consistently tried to download Spywareblaster 5.0 from Majorgeeks and consistently got a "download error". I tried about 5 times, then gave up.

I immediately went to Filehippo and it downloaded first time with no problem.

    Any clues ?

As I can see no means of editing my OP, I will add that Majorgeeks did download Spywareblaster 5.4 perfectly with no hiccups, but this version is incompatible with Windows XP Home + Google Chrome. Version 5.0 is compatible.

    1. Please post the link to SpywareBlaster 5, not 5.4 from MajorGeeks. From searching, I do not get a download for version 5 only 5.4 comes up.
    2. Did you click the report button?
I did this the other day then also followed up with an email when I noticed the version of something needed to be updated. I got an almost immediate response from one of the Admins and it was corrected.

I have v 5.2 installed on XP with no problem. I think I forgot to update the XP computer to v 5.4, which according to filehippo works on all versions of Windows.

Can you post where you read 5.4 does not work on XP?

Back again. From this page https://www.brightfort.com/spywareblaster.html
and looking in the right column, version 5.4 works on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10. (32/64-bit)

    and from here http://www.wilderssecurity.com/thre...le-chrome-firefox-windows-10-and-more.382382/
    provides protection for :
    • Internet Explorer
and any browsers that use the Internet Explorer engine, including:
      • AOL web browser
      • Avant Browser
      • Slim Browser
      • Maxthon (formerly MyIE2)
      • and more
    • Google Chrome
    • Mozilla Firefox
    • Netscape
    • Seamonkey
    • Pale Moon
    • K-Meleon
so I'm not sure why 5.4 doesn't seem to work for you. You really shouldn't be running v 5, which was Released: 03 Mar 2013 (2 years 10 months ago) .

Firstly, it is Majorgeeks link I used to download 5.0 which consistently failed, not Spywareblaster`s - see
    http://dev.majorgeeks.com/files/details/spywareblaster.html

Secondly, apart from painfully finding that 5.4 does not work with Windows XP Home + Google Chrome myself several times and being told on the program that Chrome is "not available", I am more than pleased to refer you to Brightfort`s own link giving a conclusive statement - see Q&A
    http://www.brightfort.com/sb-link/chromiumnotavailable.html

    "5.4 works on Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10. (32/64-bit)"

Oh no it doesn't ! 5.4 works on Windows XP Pro + Chrome OK, but not with Windows XP Home + Chrome.

"I'm not sure why 5.4 doesn't seem to work for you".
NOT just lil ole me, 5.4 does NOT work for anybody else on Planet Earth who is using Windows XP Home + Chrome.

It (5.4) works fine on an old back up XP3 Home system I have, that has IE8, Firefox, Opera and Chrome. As for that download link for v5 it is not on the standard MajorGeeks download page, ie the current page, as the link shows - you were trying to download it from a page that most people don't even know exists, and wouldn't be directed to.
But then if someone was worried about security, they wouldn't be using XP anymore.
But there are download links for 5 and 5.2 on sites such as oldapps.com and others.
The only issues I have seen on Brightfort's own forum have been around version 5.2, which were resolved in 5.4

Have you read the Brightfort link properly ? It states precisely what I have already said, that 5.4 will not work with Windows XP Home + Chrome. THAT is the information to read, not refer to some irrelevant chatter on Forums.

"It (5.4) works fine on an old back up XP3 Home system I have".
May I suggest that you advise Brightfort how this is done.

Here is my 5.4 panel, specifically stating that Chrome is not available when using Windows XP Home + Chrome. And YES, I have SP3 too, plus IE8 and Firefox.

I went to the download link http://dev.majorgeeks.com/files/details/spywareblaster.html
and downloaded v 5 3.9MB with no problem. So at this point, I have no clue why you are unable to download other than perhaps clicking Internode, which has problems, rather than one of the two MajorGeek's links.

I do not have Chrome installed on any Windows computers and don't want to install to see if I can figure out the problem.

Does version 5.2 work? The newer version you can install, the better off you will be.

Chrome is not supported in XP
    http://chrome.blogspot.com/2015/11/updates-to-chrome-platform-support.html
so you should not be using Chrome as a browser on an XP computer.

    @ Plodr

For your information on the SWB 5.4 debacle, read - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/595576/spywareblaster-52-does-not-work-with-google-chrome/

THAT sums it up completely, with nowhere else to go.

As for the ridiculous piece of information you list -
"Chrome is not supported in XP
    http://chrome.blogspot.com/2015/11/updates-to-chrome-platform-support.html
so you should not be using Chrome as a browser on an XP computer."

I have not wasted my time looking at the link given and fell off my chair at your blockbusting and preposterous statement which followed. Utter rubbish !

Let me sum it up :-
    1. Majorgeeks give a download link for SWB 5.0 which consistently fails.
    2. Filehippo downloads SWB 5.0 with no problem and SWB 5.0 works perfectly.
    3. Brightfort state categorically that SWB 5.4 is incompatible with Windows XP Home + Chrome and give the reason in detail.
    4. Any SWB version over 5.0 does not work with Windows XP Home + Chrome.
    5. The problem is Google`s NOT SWB.
    6. Windows XP and Google Chrome are perfectly compatible, mine works like a dream. Statements to the contrary are completely false and mischievous.

I am tired of entering into matters which have already been resolved in other sources and arguing about things that amount to no more than re-inventing the wheel.

So I am withdrawing from this thread, completely satisfied with the information and conclusions I have already extracted from my investigations.

    Thank you and Auf Wiedersehen.

If you managed to download version 5 ok, and it works on your system (and I also tried that 'dev' MG download link you gave for it and it downloads just fine) then alls well that ends well.
So I'm not entirely clear what the point of your thread was.
But at least all is working fine now for you, and given there is also a great choice of browser protection software that works just fine in XP then it's not a big issue anyway.

For those still reading this thread, SpywareBlaster v5 is not a consistently fails problem. The OP was unable to download it yet two others tested and it downloaded fine.

Also since Chrome is not longer updated for XP and XP has not been patched since April 8, 2014, I'd advise people not to use an unpatched OS with an unpatched browser on the internet. Use another operating system to browse safely. Keep the XP computer off the internet to be safe.
Compatible is not the same thing as safe. Just because something works, it doesn't mean it is safe to use.

Sorry to break my self enforced absence, but I cannot accept this misleading rubbish for the sake of other readers.

Where ever did you get this crazy idea from ?
"Also since Chrome is not longer updated for XP".

For your personal education and positive information to others, here is the latest Google Chrome update for my very own beloved Windows XP Home as of 13 January 2016. My version is the Stable, now to be updated from version 106 to version 111.

Now PLEASE Plodr, let us at least try to be a little professional when making syatem statements, so as not to misinform and confuse other readers.

Your post here was only about an alleged broken non-conventional MG download link, that in fact is not broken since some of us have successfully experimented and managed to download it.
All the rest has been separate to that and should be addressed to the developer of SB, about why their latest version doesn't work with one browser on an OS that is riddled with security flaws.
It looks like you already knew about these issues since it was all well known on that other forum a month ago, so you posting here and attacking all and sundry and treating people like they are paid IT support workers is a bit odd.

    Just to confirm one fact:
Google announced over two years ago that it was ending support for XP by April 2015.
They subsequently extended that support until December 2015, and they have now said the support end will definitely by April this year.
Given Google's changing road map for ending support - where it had already announced two earlier dates for ending XP support, it is not surprising anyone reported that. Those final dates for end of support have been known for two months at least now. So actually it is unsurprising that Brightfort wouldn't include support for a no longer supported browser in a new version released after Google's announcement.

I must sincerely apologize to you all for my abrupt remarks and lack of knowledge concerning Google`s withdrawal of support for Windows XP users with their Chrome browser.

OK, so Goliath strikes in April 2016. Well, I am afraid that David has beaten Goliath yet again.
I have installed Opera as my default browser and find it a mirror image of Chrome to use, both in operation and layout, plus Opera on my machine is faster than Chrome. Also I can access the Chrome web store for their extensions and immediately add any one of them to Opera.

Opera even automatically imported all my Chrome bookmarks without me moving my lips.

So Google, Arrivederci and do have a nice day.

And there we all were thinking this was just a rant about MG-download links that 'don't work' (but actually do), SpywareBlaster's developers, and 'unprofessional' and ignorant people here just pointing out some already known facts.
But it's all really down to the awful 'Google' being mean about not supporting supporting a massively outdated OS.
Phew! Thank goodness that was cleared up.
