Download problems

I have been working with my ISP provider, Linksys and a couple of web sites.

When I run a 'test' from sites that test your download/upload speeds, I get 6.835mps/468kps, respectively. But when I actually try to download/upload I can 'never' get over 600kps/50kps, respectively.

I have been working with Linksys for 2/3 days know, but we cannot seem to get any change of speed when we set the MTU. They also said that the router can handle up to 54mps downloads.

I keep getting dropped from web sites 'cause my download speed is w-a-a-y to slow for gig-abyte size file downloads.

I am running a Windows Vista 32bit PC, with 4meg ram. I also have a Linksys WRT54G router.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing the problem of such slow speeds? Or have any suggestions as what to do to speed things up?

    Thanks in advance,
    RwsRichard

There are some tweaks that come to mind, but let me ask this, have you tried a download accelerator?

Busy sites, or sites capped at a certain limit will not download as fast as you may like.

You can turn off the autotuning feature so many are complaining about in Vista:

From a cmd prompt with admin rights:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disablednetsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

    To turn it back on:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

    Thanks for the reply.

I have tried 2/3 download managers, but it does not help the speed while downloading. Where they did help was that I could download more then 1 file at a time without having to monitor them. But when I got to 3 files downloading at the same time, it seemed to cut the download speed to less than 200kps per file and the speed started falling off after a couple of minutes and it would go down to 45/50kps per file.

Could you explain a little more of what the 'autotuning' is in Vista?

    Thanks,
    RwsRichard

Went to the link you gave and ran the test to see if my router is compatable with Windows Vista autotuning. The only problem it found was the the Upnp was not working. But it also said it would not stop it from 'hampering' the download/upload speed. I will get a hold of Linksys anyway and see if it can be corrected.

The link also provided a list of all 'tested' routers that are Windows Vista compatible and they carry the Windows Vista logo. Of course, that is for the 32bit system and not the 64bit system - none were found for the 64bit system, yet.

Is it just me or do the 'speed test sites' only show what the modem is capable of and not really what is happening TO the PC? The ISP said the sites only show what the modem is 'receiving' and not what the PC is 'receiving'.

Well, I will keep trying. Thanks for the insight. Any other help/information would be appreciated.
