Download Resume Question

I found no recent threads on this issue.
Why do downloads fail so much from browsers?

I can pirate then new iPhone software from a torrent. It always resumes. Unplug the ethernet, crash the computer and restart, pause, force quit the torrent. Nothing will prevent a resume.

I have Gigs of bandwidth used trying to download that same file from authorized sources. I have tried Firefox, IE, Opera and all fail. My EVDO connection and my partial T1 are both marginal so interruptions on large files will happen.

    My question is:
Why can't I resume file downloads started from Firefox reliably and how can I fix it without resorting to yet more software?

    Hi

HTTP is not good and doesnt really handle resume of downloads well at all, if your connection to a download initiated with HTTP is broken then the likelyhood is that you need to start the DL again, which is why 3rd party applications to handle resume are available, like p2p or download managers, etc

If your having interuptions in downloads on your ISP then a download manager is logical solution I'm afraid.

Why pirate the new iPhone 3.0 software as its free and can be initialed via iTunes, which has a download manager built in and it can resume and downloads made via and for iTunes or iPod, iPhone.

    thanks for the reply
iTunes has the same failed code as HTTP it seems. IF iTunes loads, which is not very often after upgrading to 8.2, it will not complete a download of the iPhone software. I hit resume 2 or 3 times and it quits trying.
So far the pirated torrent is my only successful download. I am holding off using it to upgrade my iPhone until I see more comments on it working.
Sounds like we need a bit better downloading protocol in HTTP. Off to make a post on that - LOL

    HI

Yeah I would hold off on installing a download from torrent for the iPhone, I just updated my iPhone to the 3.0 software on thursday and working fine, though my internet connection is very stable so no restarts.

Does iTunes give you an error message as to why it not completing the download? as its resume has worked fine for me in the past, your not using a bricked iPhone are you?

I would give iTunes another go as its likely the servers have been busy with all the users updating their iPhones and Touch's to 3.0

No errors from iTunes. I get to re-try a few times and then it gives up. I will try late tonight when the line is most stable. If that is unsuccessful I will take a long lunch at Starbucks.

    Thanks for the support.

    Sorry, there is an error:
There is a problem downloading the software for the iPhone "Wifey's Leash". The network connection timed out.
Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.

Gotta love the "blame the user" attitude. And when I click OK the error goes away leaving me to start the download again from scratch, no resume. Ergo they need to update their technology to resume properly.

Dont think its blame the user but as you mentioned your net connection is marginal and prone to disconnections and poor connection so likely you are loosing the itunes server that many times that it goes past the amount of retries that it uses, pass the retry count with many downloader apps and you time out.

Sadly not found a way to check what retry count iTunes has or if you can change it to a higher number.

Neat dinner out and sucessful DL, next time you have big DL to do take wifey out to dinner, but glad you managed to snag the update.
