Hello. I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 on my laptop. I had to format my hard drive so I started with nothing. After install, I had to install my Network Adapter drivers manually. After successfully installing, my internet worked. But I've noticed now that my download speed is very random. (For clarity I only have AT&T 6.0 mbps DSL) It can be as low as 1 mbps and stay there. Then sometimes it'll be as high as 5.

I've tried updating the drivers that I can. The HP site only has Windows 8 support for my model. I'm wondering if anyone has an idea that could help me. Thanks.

From what I saw in the belarc report, everything on your ethernet and wireless connections is normal. What you're experiencing is server load. I get varying download speeds even with the paid version of Internet Download Manager handling my downloads.

Why would my speed be fine before I installed Win 7, and now It's slow and erratic?

Are we talking your router's sync speed or actual download speeds on a connected computer? If the latter, and if it's a wifi connection to the router you could be suffering radio interference from other wireless devices. You could try other locations and you could try changing wireless channels in the router. You could also try updating the adapter driver in Device Manager. If it's an ethernet connection then thoroughly check all internal cables.

If it's the former it could be a fault with the router or with the cable connecting the router to your phone point. You could try a hard reset of your router, but make sure you know how to configure it again afterwards!

Earthling may have an explanation. But, I've got to ask, which version of Windows were you running before. I went from XP to Vista and my download speed changed. It went from a steady 2.38 MB/sec to quite erratic at times.

My download speed on my connected laptop is showing up at around 1-2 mbps. Before I installed Windows 7 it was consistently at 6 mbps. All my torrent downloads topped out at around 650 kbps. Now they top out at 300 kbps. My tablet and Xbox internet is running perfect as usual. My tablet tested 6 mbps like normal.

I downloaded SlimDrivers last night and updated all the drivers it told me to. Didn't fix the problem. I guess the last thing to try is to hard reset my modem/router. Is there anything special I need to know to configure it back?
