    hi,

my dsl used to download at about 100 kb/sec, then it went down to 80, the 50 now max 30 kb/sec at best.
this is mainly due to hosting sites like hotfile, rapidshare etc.. does anyone know how to fix this, or what they do to computers? ive changed the system, and now have a new hard drive, but the same situation.. really need help on this. it takes more than 5 hours to download a 500mb file thats not from a hosting site.

    please HELPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!
    thanks

if any more info is needed, please let me know

Downloads from the two sites you mentioned are controlled by the sites, not your ISP. I'm guessing you have a free account. Both sites want you to pay to get faster downloads.

yes, they want you to buy premium accounts, but i downloaded using the slower free accounts, and they limited the download speed of my isp... i dont know what to do to fix it.. there is no virus or bot or other malware that ive been able to detect.

they must have done some adjustment to a setting, but i do not know where it is, or what it is.
can you help, or know of someone who can?

    thanks

Nope, they likely just cut the speed free accounts can download at. Thats not controlled on your end, its all on there machines.

    Hi

Yes as mentioned those hosting sites will throttle the download speed to try and urge you to go for a paid account, however in some instances and one reference is HERE that some ISPs (dont know your locality so the ISP may not be yours but be sure that others around the globe may do similar) have been throttling the IP addresses that some of these download sites use, although normally throttling an ISP would do is from P2P or Streaming sites (they will quote the fair usage part of your contract as a getout for doing said practice), especially when a user is downloading a lot from many or those ilk sites.

What Speed package do you pay for or is it the 100kb/s you mentioned in 1st post and what ISP?

Where are you downloading from? if you download this file HERE what's the transfer speed? may not be a file you need but start the download and let it go for 10-20mins to get an average as most downloads start quick and slow to a average within 10mins or so.

If you do a speedtest HERE what's your speed?

What is your Windows version and Service Pack and are you fully up to date with all updates?

As you mentioned you changed your system, did you re-install Windows again? if so did you also re-install the drivers for your hardware as in Chipset, Network from the makers site?

Is general surfing of the web slow?
    What browser do you use?
What security applications do you have installed, please name all of them?
Do you use a proxy service and if so what one?

As per my experience with this app, the adjusted settings are an improvement over the Windows XP default settings.

    SpeedGuide.net TCP Optimizer 3.0.7

Please follow DavidGP's suggestions and answer the questions as best you can. :major

If you pay for them, i think the speed will increase.

    i am in cairo egypt

I am using windows xp service pack 3 clean installation and i formatted the partition.
    pc is a:

    pentium 4
    single processor 2.13 ghts intel
    2gbts ram

I have most of the updates, the ones that microsoft recommends which i do not have either i do not have the programs associated with them, or they are too big to download in one go (those files are 1 - 3 gbs... i am looking at the individual components to see which ones i do need and those i will download)

did not install the drivers from the manufacturers site, but from the motherboard disk.

the package i pay for is 512k for about a year and half now

    speed test

    0.24Mpbs download
    0.07Mpbs upload

    according to http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/calculate/downloadcalculator.php a 500mb file on a 512k line would take about 2hours 16minutes...

the file you told me to test on, after running the download for at least 10min, the download speed is 26kb/sec estimated download time is 5 hours 37 min

    browser

    firefox 5.0

but i also use firefox 3.1 (only when i download to be able to use zonealarm's force field..it has helped in the past, new versions are not compatible with the new versions of firefox unless you install the full zonealarm package which i do not want)

    Security:

Avast 6.0.1000 updated file scanning on

outpost firewall pro 7.5 updated, proactive protection on

spyware firewall (too bad the makers of this program dropped it..great app!)

malwarebytes anti malware 1.51 updated, protection module enabled

spyware blaster updated, and protection enabled

search and destroy updated, system immunized (tea timer not used, too heavy for my system)

    spyware guard

    trend micro browser guard

    trend micro RUBotted

trend micro web protection add on

    trend micro house call

    windows defender updated

IObit malwarefighter 1.0 updated (thinking of getting v3.0 pro)

    tuneup utilites 2010

    zonealarm force field 1.5.53.49

note.. i used to have more security, but the newer version of programs are too heavy for my system. i download the most recent versions when i can, update and scan with them. when i do get a better pc, i would buy those programs as they have helped in the past. spyware doctor, counterspy to name a couple.

no proxy used (tried that in the past with bad results)

browsing speed....originally it was much faster, ive felt it slow down quite a bit..this maybe due to some of the software updating, but ive set times on them so they dont all update in continuous pattern. overall not too happy with the speed, but considering the line and system its manageable.

    thank you for your help

i posted the info you asked for, would appreciate any help you can give..if someone has a test pc and a modem they can do without, you can come up with a way to isolate whatever it is they send and make a program to fix the settings,. many people would appreciate this.

    thanks

    Hi

Sadly the paid working job gets in the way sometimes and I maybe a day or dollar short at times in replying, but lets look at what you posted

Motherboard disk drivers is great as they are the manufacturers drivers anyways.

Firefox 5 is fine but did you also try IE? could also try Opera to see if DL speeds are different, likely they will not be, but worth a test.

I'm more leaning to you have too much security and Avast is going to conflict with Trend micro, which is likely to also conflict with zonealarm force field, malwarebytes anti malware and IObit malwarefighter if both are resident live scanning.

I would uninstall all of your security applications apart from Windows Defender and Spywareblaster and see how your speeds are once they are all uninstalled and you have rebooted.

Its great to be security concious BUT we can at times go over the top and this causes issue between applications.

would doing the speed tests in safe mode give good results, cause my security apps are not functioning in safe mode?

    thanks

Thank you are words that do not express what i want to say

i followed what you said, and the speed has greatly improved...the culprit, my over exerted subconscious need for security and trend micro. i removed everything except for spyware blaster, avast, outpost and spybot search and destroy.

    did 2 tests

1st with avast file scanning and web protection off, and outpost suspended

    ping
    189ms

    download
    .43Mbps

    upload

    .10Mbps

2nd with avast and outpost running

    ping
    159ms

    download
    .42Mbps

    upload

    .10Mbps

testing the 903mb file of windows 7 update from majorgeeks, in both cases gave an average of 48-50kb/sec download estimated time for download aprox 4 hours 30 min (but looks like it will take a bit longer than that)

its a bit slower than http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/calculate/downloadcalculator.php says it should be, but one major difference than before!

i tested my other security software by installing them one by one to see the difference, trend micro cuts speed by half. my current list of software:

    avast

    outpost firewall

    malwarebytes antimalware

    spyware firewall

    spyware blaster

    spyware search and destroy

    tuneup utilities

    windows defender

browsing is better. as for browser...opera maybe a good tv host and network, but when it comes to browsers...well,
not all that great. ie problems with it...always seems to be stuck in limbo land for one reason or another despite the fact i only have one tab open... best browser ever NETSCAPE!!!!!!!! BEST THERE WAS, BEST THERE IS, BEST THERE EVER WILL BE! too bad it was scrapped. think ill go pick up the last version made, never had a problem with it, always fast, easy no matter how many tabs were open..even had a way to make the tabs and bookmarks into a file for transferring!

let me know if these results seem accurate to you

thank you very much for your help Grand Pooh-Bah :D

now if only non paying jobs would pay the bills life would be great :D

Opera is a fine browser; it has some nice features. Your comments do not reflect the normal user experience with Opera. So, I'm inclined to think you may still have some lingering computer issues.

Eh, well, Netscape is dead; it's been dead for quite some time now. All support for it ended in March 2008, over 3 years ago. Frankly, the idea of going back to a browser that old is just absurd. And, in light of your online security obsession, using an old browser makes no sense. And, by the way, I don't believe Netscape ever had a tabbed browser. no, actually my experience with opera had nothing to do with security issues at all. if i recall the simplest problem is that it didnt even show if the page was loading or not! so for me, not worth even going into other problems about it.

yes, unfortunately it is dead have to agree with you on that. it was a browser ahead of its time, and still is when you look at what it had..it did have tabbed browsing. it was the first browser i used ever since v 1.0. the first to have tabs and built in security scanner. very light on the system. had firefox been modeled properly there wouldnt be all this memory and cpu leakage.

ask people who used netscape and theyll tell you about it...try the old copy of it, you may like it, and do open tabs in it as well.

I have to second that Opera's browser isn't for everyone. I personally don't like that the "back" button doesn't go to the previous page, but instead goes to the cached copy of the previous page -- it doesn't update it. Also, it doesn't handle Flash well, IMO.

That is easily adjusted to suit your preference.

On the Opera browser's menu, go to:
Tools > Preferences > Advanced tab > History

    under the heading:
check if cached page is updated on the server
    Check documents

from the drop down list, select Always

    EDIT:
Sorry, this may Not actually be the solution. :-o
    I'll research it further.

For anyone that is interested, I think I have found a resolution for this issue.

Setting History Navigation Mode to 2 has produced the desired effect.
For example, when viewing Quick Links > Subscribed Threads in the Major Geeks forums, threads with New postings are displayed in Bold type.
If I click on a Bold type thread to view the posts and then use the Back Button to go back to Subscribed Threads, that thread is no longer displayed in Bold type.

The setting can be adjusted here: opera:config#UserPrefs|HistoryNavigationMode

More information on this behavior here: JavaScript and History Navigation
