Download speed question

Hi there, I didn't know where to stick this thread, so I figured I'd put it here.

My actual download speed is far slower than it is testing, ie
I get onto Speakeasy speed test ( http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ ) and test my download speed. It comes to about .9 MBs. But, when I go to download a 150 Mb file, the time estimate is aproximately 1 hour, while you would think, based on the test speed, that it would take a matter of moments.
My ISP has a history of throttling, but when I am being throttled, my download test speed usually shows it.

Actual download speed never equals how fast you will download your content.

A lot of it comes down to your source of the file.

Ended up downloading via ftp, a lot faster.

Also, if you use Firefox, there are a series of adjustments (Tweaks) that can greatly increase the efficiency of the browser.

A friend introduced me to "Internet Download Manager" (IDM) which has really sped up my own downloads, of which there are many.

But whatever you do on your end is, of course, only half the story. How fast the server on the other end is, or how busy it is serving other users, is the other half of the story.
Don't forget the internet itself. At certain hours of the day, the entire internet can get loaded down and seem to really DRAG.
Remember the old saying....."a chain is only as strong as its weakest link".
It's frustrating as heck, to have a 5 meg connection with your ISP and yet you download a file and it comes in at 15kbps. Cheeeech!

Then optimize your own PC and don't have a lot of 'junk' running in the background when you're trying to download files.

That's 0.9Mb/s, right? So, no, a 150 MB file will not download in "moments". How long did it actually take with the "download accelerator"?

 

Well... this is rather embarrassing... I should have payed attention to my capitalization... :-o

 

My point was whether your speed is 9Mb/s or 0.9Mb/s; I was asking for confirmation that the decimal point was correct. Some Internet users do get speeds of 9Mb/s or higher. My DSL service is 1.5Mb/s or 0.6Mb/s faster than 0.9Mb/s. Your speed, if it is, indeed, 0.9Mb/s, is at the lower end of broadband (DSL or cable) Internet services.

 

It was meant to be .9 Mb/s.
