Download To Root Directory????

I just downloaded a file, a zip file, which when opened is an exe. Installed it is a sheet optimizer app (a carpentry program). I have never downloaded a file which I had no control over where on the hard drive it would be downloaded to and then to find it was downloaded to the root directory. I deleted it before unzipping it. Is this an unusual situation? Any comments on the file going to the root directory? Adware????

 

Shouldn't be a problem if you scanned it with antivirus software before unzipping. This is apparently where the program authors wanted it, as I'm assuming that it was a self extracting WinZip file.

 

I have never seen anything download to the root directory. I'm not sure I should be comfortable with this first, and second, I need an explanation as to why the creator arranged for his zip file to download to the root directory as opposed to program files or temporary files: advantage.........disadvantage........why?

 

I can't answer as to why the creator designed his file to download to the root directory, as I didn't create it or assign its download place. One advantage may be that it is easier to find? If you scanned it with antivirus software prior to unzipping and have AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy installed , then there shouldn't be any problem with spyware. Whether it is in C: or program files, if it had spyware/adware it would still be installed, regardless.
