I have already downloaded and run the Windows Repair Tweaking.com, but see that there is now a newer version. Do I need to uninstall the previous version, or just download the newer one, and it will do what it does and I will then be up to date? Also, I am not clear what the difference is between the "installer" download and the "portable" download - and which I should download. I have an HP Pavilion Notebook PC, Windows 7. Thanks for all your help. You guys have been great!! Mimi

    Greetings, Papergirl.

I would venture to say that you should be fine with downloading and running the "installer" version - it should just overwrite or replace any files it needs to in the default location(s). The "portable" version may do the same, but usually the portables are meant to be run from discrete sources such as flash drives.

Thank you, Caliban - this is what I supposed that it would just overwrite and replace - but wanted to be sure before I just jumped in . And thanks for the clarification on the "portable" usage. I will go with the installer version!! I downloaded the Windows Repair because for a couple of months I have not been able to update Windows. I will start the update and it just keeps running the bar in the graph to indicate something is happening - but nothing is happening. I tried just downloading even one of the updates that was tiny, but same thing. It is just not downloading the updates. I thought after I ran the Windows Repair I would get back to normal, but now no updates show at all for me to choose. I guess I will wait until the next time it prompts me with updates before putting it to the test... Thanks again... Mimi

Looking at your Software thread, it looks as if you may have some underlying (and maybe unsolved) issues. Tell you what: if the Tweaking tool doesn't produce some quick results per your update problems, then I suggest that you start a new thread in the Software forum describing your symptoms, steps you've tried, etc...you've already touched based with some of the best minds here with David, Satrow, Max - continue the dialogs with them and I bet you'll get all of your issues cleared up...

Thank you. I will take note of your suggestion if the new version of the Window Repair does not clear things up. I have just downloaded the new version but will wait till morning to run it. I was advised to run it twice anyway, so I have done once with the older version and will do the 2nd run with the new version. Again , thanks... Mimi

Be advised that one of the admins has already moved this thread to the Software forum. Good luck !

There were a number of us that had issues trying to get updates for Win 7. We ended up using wsus offline update to "kick start" the process. After wsus installed the updates it found, Windows Update performed normally and we got the rest of the updates to bring us current.
