downloading pictures question

Hi,

i had a problem with my computer where i had to reinstall window XP. Before the reinstall anytime i would download a picture from a website, they would be saved as JPEG files. Now, after having reinstalled windows XP, every time i download the same pictures , they are only being saved as bitmap files. IS there a setting on my computer i can change to once get get pictures to be saved as JPEG files. ? I appreciate the help
