    Hi,
I'm using Windows 7 and IE 8 on an HP Pavillion DV4. I'm using the wireless adapter and I see I have an Atheros wireless and, unbeknownst to me, a Microsoft miniport wireless adapter... whatever that is.

I've been trying to download, well, anything I might need. After 35 seconds the download stops progressing. The download window stays up, the speed and time remaining stay put, and the percent complete does not move, memory is not let go although the cpu goes from about 25% to 5%. It will sit like that forever it seems, but I cancel it. Doesn't matter how big the download, or how fast the pipe, it quits after about 35 seconds.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    jeff

    Hi Jeff, Welcome to MG's.

You can disable the mini port as it may be that it is conflicting with your Atheros adapter......

Disable the mini port using this command...go to Start> Search> cmd.exe > type .... netsh wlan stop hostednetwork
then stop the service by typing.... netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=disallow

if this does not remmedy you issue then follow the same command to reverse the changes except type start instead of stop and allow instead of disallow.
Post back to let me know how you get on.

Thanks very much Ian, appreciate the quick feedback! I tried your solution and it seems to have worked. Also finished a full scan last night and spyware doctor claims to have found trojan.vb.bfp in an explorer temp file. I clicked clean and it seemed to have no trouble removing it. could the trojan (if it was real) have setup this miniport?

    Hi Jeff,
thanks for the feedback and I am pleased to hear that the issue is now fixed ;).
Seems that you AV scan did find an infection, please take a look here...

    http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?md5=ed87b8617305df3252e384fb772534ab

I would strongly advise that you run through the malware removal guide here..

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35407

try and run all of the scans and post the logs as requested in a new thread here...

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

use the name of the infection that you have found as a Title and one of the Malware Experts will take a look at them and run through the removal process with you. Please be patient though as they can be very busy but they will get to you.
Post back here to let me know how you have got on, hopefully you will get the all clear but with having an infection as bad as that it is best to have an expert eye scan through the logs to make sure it has all gone.

    Good Luck ;)

Hi Ian, well, i didn't get to this last night. After rebooting, the problem was happening again. i reran your above instructsion. Now downloads start off great but are choked to zero over about 30 seconds, then they recover to 20 after a few minutes, and are choked off to zero again. How annoying is that. I'll let this download, and maybe it will be done one of the items by tomorrow. any other suggestions to get the dowloads back to a reasonable speed?

    cheers,
    jeff

    Hi Jeff,
I would strongly suggest that you go through the malware cleaning proccess, it will be the malware that is "choking" your downloads, if you have another machine that you can work from you should use that to download the tools/scanners that you will need and re-name them as suggested to ensure that the malware/virus doesn't try to stop them loading. I believe once you have been given the all clear from the malware experts the issue will stop!!!.

Who is your Internet Provider ?? how do you connect?? DSL/CABLE/DIAL UP ??
You could phone your IP to see if there is an issue with your line, a quick diagnostic from their end will find any issues.
