"dqs training" error on boot

I broke my old motherboard and instead of getting a straight replacement, bought a foxconn a6vmx one. That boots fine with one stick or ram, but if I either move that same stick to slot 2 or add a 2nd stick, the pc fails to get to POST. When I go back to the initial setup, I get this dqs error.

Is it possible that new ram would help, or even the cpu maybe not compatible with the mobo?
Are there bios settings that would fix this? I thought the replacement mobo was faulty but I'm on my 3rd replacement.

I'm a bit stuck seeing as I can boot into xp with just one stick of (1gb :( ) ram.

Tried a stick of 2gb ram with the same result, works in slot 1 but not in slot 2. Any ideas anyone?

The wording of the error is : "DQS training failed on previous boot, reverted to slower Dram speed"

Are the RAM (or RAM with the same specs) and QVL listed on the motherboard's QVLs (qualified vendors lists)? Click on Tech Support, then select Support List from the Type drop down menu, then click on search.

As far as I can tell, RAM with the same specs as listed there are in the PC - but I don'[t see an exact match to what I'm using. Even if I'm not using one of those specified on that list, I'd have thought that if that was the problem then it wouldn't accept one stick of it rather than only having problems with two?

You didn't specify (or I misunderstood) which stick was being used where. That said, RAM can display some very odd behavior when not working correctly. I have seen sticks test and work great individually but as soon as you install two together, errors result.

Since you have tried 3 motherboards now, I would dump that RAM and buy two brand new sticks. BTW, the a6vmx came out in 2007. Are these "new" boards, or all used?

Since these boards are old (even if not used), I definitely would check Foxconn's website for updated drivers and BIOS.

Have updated the bios and bought a new stick of 2gb ram and that works in slot 1 but the pc fails to boot if I put that same ram in slot 2. I think I'll give in and just use this one stick of 2gb. When I've more cash I'll just get a whole new pc - this tinkering in the guts of my pc has been fairly infuriating.

Well, it may be the slot too.
