Right, a long story which is best began at the beginning.
I purchased and installed Dragon Age Origins on my computer (windows xp professional). At the end of the installation it came up with an error message, titled 'MSIEXEC' saying "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" then completed the installation.

When i tried to run the game, it said something about not being able to initialize PhysX and gave me a website i could download PhysX from. I uninstalled PhysX then downloaded it, but when i try now to install it it says "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" again.

I looked around the net and someone had said to download what was probably an update for the windows downloader, this didnt work.

I tried running the install in Safe Mode as the administrator (which i was already) The message was slightly different, saying that the administrator had restricted use of a specific item (which, by the way it hasnt specified to ME yet, annoyingly). Looked at the permissions of the .exe i was trying to run, i have full access. Also tried to 'run as administrator' out of safemode, didnt work.

So, main problem right now is installing PhysX, which it refuses to do because of the MSIEXEC error
I have run out of ideas, i hope someone out there has some.

It may be that you had or have earlier versions of PhysX or even had failed installations. Before you start, take a backup in case the cleanup wipes out something that is needed.

I suggest you clear out any previously failed installs using Windows Installer CleanUp Utility http://majorgeeks.com/Windows_Installer_CleanUp_Utility_d4459.html specifically selecting PhysX.

Also further cleanup by using Revo Uninstaller http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html and CCleaner (registry clean) http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

Once clean, download and install PhysX for Windows XP Pro

It may well be the case that the game as well as the installers all need to be cleaned and run as administrator.

Which SP (Service Pack) do you have for your Windows XP Pro?

Thank you very much, the registry cleanup did the trick :)
