Drive letter changes... nothing works.

Well I have read a lot here on external drive letters that keep changing. I have tried most of the suggestions but nothing works. I have a Western Digital External that I have re-formatted and changed the drive letter to Q. Works great for a couple of days and then...whammo it's an F or G again. I have changed letters, usb ports etc..... am I missing something? Using XP..and need to get my auto back up working again, but when the drive letters change..it stops. Can I save it to a folder and keep it out of "My Computer" ?

 

Changing USB ports can change drive letter. Look here:

That shouldn't cause it to hang though.
If it's a laptop, try removing power cord and battery, push and hold power button on for about 30 seconds, then replace battery and power cord. This has been known to solve some USB problems, and since it's easy to do, you could give it a go as one option.

 

Tried it "to the letter" and what came up on my screen was different then the instructions in your "Here". Difference was Console came up and it was empty and it didn't give me any other options. I changed it by using disk management from my computer and changed the drive letter again (numerous tries) but never got a "save" option? Could this problem be caused by re-booting?
