Its a shot in the dark, but since you built it, it shouldn't be a problem. Try switching the drives, make the master the slave and the slave the master and make sure you do the jumpers too (master always at the end of the ribbon and slave in the middle). It doesn't happen often, but sometimes one drive wants to be the master so badly, it messes everything up if you try to set it as a slave. So try swapping the drives and then go into Device manager and uninstall both of them and restart to refresh the generic drivers.

Do me a favor, go into Device Manager and look at your IDE controllers, both primary and secondary and look under the Advanced Settings tab of their Properties, to see if they are detected as DMA instead of PIO. I once had a drive that kept causing problems and after 5 times Windows System turned off DMA to prevent futher problems. Once I took the drive out and replaced it, I had to edit the registry to get DMA back. I have the registry entries to change in my files, but it would do no good to post them unless you have lost DMA.

Sorry to say that I don't think reinstallation is the answer. I would guess that you'll go thru the process and find the same problem still exists. Perhaps uninstalling any burning apps you have or any programs that have to do with the drives, and then doing a registry cleaning before reinstalling your burner would be more appropriate.

thanks again for the reply Appzalien, but they are all dma and I have also went through all the third party burning apps and deleted but the weird thing is that I have a laptop that has all the same programs my built one has and there is not one prob. My other desktop dont have the prob either, So not sure if there is some connection or not. I dont think the reinstall will be the answer either but what else is there? Thanks again.

    Hi All,

As long as a burner is reading OK and they will without the burning software, the indication is that there is either something wrong with the drive or the burner software. I have extra drives so would first try another drive and then reload the software. If you don't have an extra drive I would try reloading the burner software. If it's XP and you are using the XP burner software then that's another story.
    Good Luck, Jim

If one of your burners was Nero, then you should be aware that using either Nero's or Microsofts uninstaller, is often not enough to remove problem registry entries. Nero has special uninstallers just for this purpose. Go to their site and then support and pick the version you are/were running and download from its utility page "Nero General Cleantool" and clean your drive and see what happens.

Roxio is another culprit when it comes to screwing up your system. But with Roxio the only way I was ever able to get back to normal was a clean install, not even a repair would fix it. This was quite a few years ago and I haven't used Roxio since, but "once bitten twice shy" it will never grace any of my PC's EVER again, that goes for Sony's Sonic as well, which is basically Roxio hidden behind a new name.

    Hi All,

Just a thought. I did not like the burner that comes with XP. It's by ROXIO. I loaded Roxio Ver 6. It still works great.
