driver for SMBus controller

i have a compaq 1110 i'm trying to bring back to life. no usb peripherals are working ( printer, webcam, etc.). so i check in device manager, the only thing flagged is the SMBus controller, drivers not installed [Intel 82801DB/DBM SMBus controller-24C3]. hit re-install.get error message - the driver installation file is missing a necessary entry .... may be because the INF was written for W95 or later.
(scratch head .... logically, XP-SP2 is later than W95)
searched intel.com for driver, no results found.
searched hp.com, with same result.
where do i go now ?

 

You need to go back to www.intel.com and download the chipset INF update utility for your specific chipset. SMBus drivers are part of the chipset INF 'drivers'... download the newest version available.

thanks for the point, hopperdave.
intel's latest does not support my chipset (845G).
googled up an earlier version that does ...
install and run, reboot, re-install driver .....
same error message !
