Try moving your NIC to a different slot.

I had a user with this problem recently and updating to SP2 resolved it so there is another option too.

Try moving your modem to another slot then. You can't change IRQ's (easily) in XP. It's all managed for you.

IRQ assignments are generally configured by the PCI slot the related card is placed in, so like the others suggested, try -physically- moving the modem to another open PCI slot (assuming it is a PCI type modem card).

If there are no other slots available, try removing some of the other cards you might have installed for troubleshooting purposes to see if the problem still exists.

take out all hardware that you can and reseat it back into its slots. i'd say 80% of the time its just a jarred connection problem. (happened to me with my RAM just the other day)

hi, im getting the same BSoD on win2k sp4. as soon as the modem establishes a dial-up connection, the pc reboots(shows irq_not_less_or_equal ndis.sys BSoD now that i've disabled restart on system failure). i've tried 3 different modems - 2 internal, 1 ext usb. still the same shiz, tried the winsock fix util, uninstalled all virus scanners, removed all old drivers from devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices, flashed bios, updated chipset drivers, did win repair install.. i dunno anymore. any ideas before i format. i hate formatting..

    More information on this problem

There are several possibilities.I would do as the others recommended, and try changing the modem/ other pci cards around, first.
    Possible ram issue,
1/ It could help to tweak memory settings so they match the CPU speed and FSB as close as possible
If you have two sticks of ram, one might be suspect - run memtest to check.

2/ Our old mate Roxio can cause this

3/ Anti-virus Software: AVG7 was a problem with this, an update can cure it.

    4/ IRQ sharing

thanks for the info baklogic! after swapping memory with new sticks, swapping them around etc, still no change. i had the modems in all available slots and as i said above the problem occurred when using external usb modem as well. i also started getting KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED - system32:lzx BSoD. so i formatted :/ everything back to normal. i would have liked to solve this one. really annoys me that a format did.

    any idea what system32:lzx means?

From a google around, I found this
    Win-Trojan/Rustock.86016

i found a couple of trojans using AVG, NOD32, AdAware and SpyBot, not the Rustock variant though. Might have been a virus, dunno...

I had to repair a friends computer- he had an outdated antivirus- spent hours saving his data- I don't know if this is a record, but a new install of AVG free, found two before I ran it, --- 934 when run, most quarenteened, rest deleted, then a further trojan found later-
I found this very disturbing, and I don't think he will be running without a decent antivirus, again.
