    Hi. Apologies if this is the wrong thread..

    I have a Compaq Evo N800c here which has just had XPSP2 pro installed on it. I'm having problems installing the drivers for the wireless card (Broadcom 802.11g) and the VGA (ATI Mobillity Radeon 7500).

    When I try to install the VGA driver, it crashed half way through with the error - 'Setup failed to run installation: 0x80040707'. The broadcom driver installed with no errors but device manager is still giving me yellow ?'s for it and utility won't launch from the control panel applet. Using a sys info tool I got the following info about the two devices:

    Both are showing the same problem which I presume is memory related but I'm not really sure where to go or what to do from here..?? Any advice would be great thanks.

    Oh and the wired NIC is installed okay.

    Tell us more about the XP installation.
    Was this a recovery?
    Was the SP2 part of the install or added later?
    For the ATI is this a separate card and have you enabled it in BIOS?

    The guys in the first url post there are having issues with an NVidia driver and they talk about a 'hicoupphing' device manager - ie it refreshes very often. My device manager was doing that to so I did what the guys recommended and removed any usb devices (hsdpa usb modem) which seems to have stopped the refreshing problem, but my drivers still won't work.

    Originally the laptop was SP1, but this was wiped and XPSP2 freshly installed. The ATI card is part of the original machine.

    -Okay I just noticed something odd there - the little 'safely remove hardware' icon is showing in the system tray. I don't have any devices plugged in and it's giving me the inbuilt DVDROM as a device to unplug or eject... is that right..?? If it is I've never seen that before...

    I'm afraid you will have to put up with us older and slower Geeks being pedantic.

    I asked about the method of introducing SP2 as this service pack includes DEP.
    DEP (data execution prevention) is a method of preventing execution from certain memory areas, for security purposes. It's introduction was responsible for many varied SP2 problems. I have not come across your particular one but I would not be suprised to find it is a DEP issue which would vanish if you turned DEP off.

    Try editing the boot.ini file if you have a line which reads, say
    noexecute=/optin

    to
    noexecute=alwaysoff

    and then try the driver install.

    Apologies in the delay in replying. The service pack was bundled in the installation of xp so it was not installed after the OS.

    I tried editing the boot.ini file to no avail. So I swapped out the memory stick in the laptop - and in the process upgraded from 512Mb to 1Gb. I also increased the pagefile to see if that made a difference, but it didn't.

    I tried to install the VGA driver again and the installation did get a little bit further, in that I didn't get an error pop up on screen. I'll try to explain this as best I can, but what's happening is that the ATI install is getting so far, and when the screen with all the usual ATI stuff should pop up, the installer is staying minimized and ikernel.exe takes up 99% cpu. And it just stays that way until I kill the process.

    I installed the wireless driver and that setup went through fine - as it had before, but when I reboot and check out device manager, it's still giving me a question mark and when I click on the wireless configuration utility, nothing happens even though the process starts.

    I ran the System Info utility again, and both the devices are still referencing the same error as before.

    Any more suggestions? The owner of the laptop top is quite keen to get his machine back...!! :cry

    ATI drivers are usually better behaved than Nvidia. The only time installation normally fails is if you are using the wrong one!

    So where did the driver come from? ATI or HP

    Have you tried looking for alternatives?

    Adding extra memory will not make any difference.

    Has XP found a driver of its own or is the system stuck in 640x480 mode?
    If XP has supplied its own driver try uninstalling this first.
