This is not a hard disk it is a optical LG DVD burner you do not need driver
just plug it and it's ready to uses.....

You can get "Firmware" for your DVD player but if you don't know what your doing and are not experinicing problems NOT RECOMMENDED.

    Okay lets get some more info;

If you open "My Computer" on the Desktop can you see the DVD-RAM Drive?

Have you put a DVD or CD into the computer and seen what happened?!?

    Does the light come on?

Have you tried to just burn another DVD?!?

the light comes on it even opens and closes but the computer doesnt show it, if i insert disk and go to media player it doesnt pick it up. i went through properties/hardware/device manager. in my computer the icon is there but it has a blak exclamation mare in a yellow circle next to the icon

So when you went to the device manager did you double click on the device and try "Troubleshooting" under the "General" tab?

Go to the Driver tab and try "Roll Back Driver"?

Here is a link for LG in the US you should be able to source either the Installation Drivers of latest Firmware:

    http://us.lgservice.com/

If you cant find the software just write to them because if you can't fix it with the above steps I am thinking there is something more to this (hardware failure and malfunction and time to return it).

went to the site and there was no driver software for
HL- DT- ST DVDRRW GCA 4164B got 4166B (does this matter). it said "Never update the firmware if the problem you’re having is the
drive isn't seen by windows" so i didnt know what to do.

Have you tried deleting it from your computer and restarting? Windows should pick it back up again and it should just start working.

AS you have a error symbol in Device Manager, when you view the properties does the Device Status box have one of these error codes Code 31, Code 32, Code 19, Code 39, or Code 41?

if so try this ( listed for Roxio Software but works the same for none installing drivers ) if you are using XP.

I don't know and would definately hesitate here try what sheesh and Halo have said firstly and write an email to the RW device manufacter explaining your dilema but definately leave your above option to the last of all.

Also go to the computer maufacters site and see if they have either installation software or Firmware for your particular RW device.

Hi Paula. I wish I could give a good source. I am looking the same for a place I can download a driver for another hard drive. It is a seagate baracuda...please let me know if you find out a good source...I'll let you know if I find something....

i spoke to a IT technician he said that the problem isnt software and that i should disconnect the driver from the computer, switch it on, shut down, reconnect the drive and if it doesnt automatically install the the problem is that the dirver is screwed up? so i try that!!

.. Reseating the plugs may help. But you most likely won't have to open your case. Just remove the driver from your computer and restart. If it still doesn't work your next bet is to open the case and reseat.

when u say remove the drive do you mean phsically or to uninstall it.

I'm saying remove the driver and restart windows. Delete it from your device manager. If after restarting Windows doesn't redetect it and it doesn't start working again... physically remove the connections to the drive itself and replug them back in.

If what sheesh suggests doesn't work and you need to do it manually and you want some pics on how to do this, unplug and replug DVD device, just ask and I will post some. I was suspcious that it was more than software earlier (post 7).

    Is it still under warranty?

If not, my friend and I went to our local comp shop were they have a bargain bin and he got a Pioneer DVD-RW Dual Layer for AU$40, good brand at a good price and it was ex display stock.

    hi paula,
sounds like your ide lead has either slipped off the back of dvd drive.or was badly connected it might not be but it is the first place i'd look
    it needs to be re-connected
if your not compatant to attempt this ask someone who is
it will mean taking the sides of your case.
it is a five second job to basic compatent pc user.
repost if you feel confident to have a go and we'll post you a how to do it
    good luck
    and welcome to majorgeeks:)

Most welcome, its a weird one as it seems that the problem at first is hardware but as the registry does control alot of the functions of a PC, it ends up being a software issue, glad you tried it and it worked :)
