I have an older HP nc6220. After I used a registry cleaner, my cd/dvd drive quit working. I can't go back to an earlier save point-it won't let me. When I click on computer, there is no drive letter for a cd/dvd drive. When I use the device manager, the message says it can't be started because the drivers are missing or corrupted.

My OS is XP Professional, and I tried to use the driver program you recommend, but get the error message that it is not a system 32 whatever.

I am fairly new to computers, and don't want to download something that will make my computer crash, but I really need my cd drive. I am taking online college classes, and they sent me a cd to use for class.

    Can somebody help me, please?

    Welcome to Majorgeeks.com :)

I have moved your post to its own thread. Please start your own thread in future rather than tag on to someone else's (otherwise known as hijacking). It makes it very confusing for the Original Poster (OP) and those trying to assist if it all gets jumbled up with another person's problem, even if the problems appear to be the same. The computer specs and end solution may be different.

    Thanks :)

Hi eresat2! :wave Welcome to Major Geeks! :major

The first thing I'd do is go to your Device Manager, right click the drive and select "Uninstall" and then restart the PC (even if you've done this already, do it again for this next step). If that didn't restore the drive, use the appropriate download from this link. Once downloaded, you'll have a .zip file. unzip it, then double-click the resulting .reg file. You will get a 'warning' about "do you want to import this in to the registry?" and you'll say "yes". Once it's done, restart your PC. If this doesn't work, let us know and we'll try something else. Good luck!

DLB, you saved my educational life! ;) I had to go to the link you provided, because the first plan didn't work. :cry Anyway, I really appreciate what you did for me. :-D I stumbled across this website by accident, :confused but it has been a godsend! I have found more fun (and incredibly useful) stuff here than anywhere else on the web! I tell all my friends at school about this site!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!:wave
