I recently baught a dell inspiron 1721. I reformatted the drive to rid it of the microshit vista and reinstall windows xp 64. When finished i was missing some device drivers compatible with xp. I used DRIVER DETECTIVE and the laptop now works great. Now, heres the problem: I installed the driver detective on my custom built desktop and used it to search for outdated or missing drivers. Everytime i updated a driver for the motherboard it trashed it. Then it said my cam wasnt even plugged in and when i read that i turned it right on...lol. then it said my audio driver wasnt even installed but when i checked the driver date it was only a year out. Now, why with all the rotten reviews i read on the net about driver update programs do they work great on fresh installs on manufactured pc's with missing device drivers, and yet work so terrible on custom built?.......i hear so many different things anymore i don't know who to believe or who to trust. I did manage to update my graphics card and ya they do work better now but all the other devices were a flop. I wonder if the program would actualy work well if i was more aware of the driver i was installing...hmmm. i also read to stay away from these types of programs cuz there malware and viruses and yet work decent in certain situations and virus scans turn up nothing.......

I'm not a proponent or opponent of driver detective, but all they do is what you can do and thats locate a driver. There is no need to download a program like that because they keep you coming back for more even though you don't need it.
Do you have to pay for this service? I know they say download it for free but thats is the initial setup, whats after that are there advertisements? they have to be compensated some how?

Stay away from Driver Defective. It's borderline spyware IMO. If you need help with drivers, upload an Everest hardware report from your PC as an attachment to your next post, and we'll do our best to find the drivers for you....

    Hi

As mentioned I would stear clear of driver update applications as in the most part they only list unified drivers and these dont always work correctly as many makers customise the parts they licence from developers like Realtek, Intel, Ati and Nvidia.

Ram driver, dunno as last time I came across that name mentioned it was for a Ram Disk and many users dont use those these days. Would need to see screeshot of driver listing in Dev Mgr to gague this more.

If your PC is working ok then I would not update it, especially as you have downgraded to XP x64 from hardware that was likely designed with Vista in mind.
