Another wonderful BSOD from Vista Ultimate 64-bit. Ran XP for like 4 years with none of these, Vista two week and this is third. sigh*

OK I get a BSOD:cry that I believe is related to my 1394 External HDD. It ONLY happens when connected to this computer. All I can read from it before the computer kicks it is "Driver Power State Failure". Specifically what happens is I am using my HDD (Maxtor) and it is just kind of connected to my computer or I can be accessing it....and then it will inexplicably go nuts and run my computer into the afformentioned BSOD. I am pretty sure that this only happens if I have put my computer into a sleep state at some point with the Hard drive connected, and then woke it back up. I did some research and apparently this is a known problem in Vista and was fixed with SP1....

The only thing is, that I have SP1:confused. Apparently the specific hotfix which addressed this issue was KB929762. This is definitely in SP1. Anyway I tried to download the driver again, just for fun but when I try to install it... I get the attached error: Windows update standalone installer "This Update Does Not Apply To Your System"

This is not entirely surprising as My system already has the update.

    Suggestions?

I'm not sure if it's the same Vista as it would be for XP, but go to the Control Panel, double-click Programs, and get it to display all the installed updates (with XP you simply checked a box for "show updates"). Hopefully you can find KB929762 and uninstall it. If it's not listed, enable viewing of hidden files and folders (click on View > Options I think; I'm still not 100% versed in Vista :-o ) and look through the System32 folder for the update (KB929762) and there should be an uninstaller. Anyway, the idea is to uninstall it, reboot, and re-install it.

BTW- most external Firewire/1394 drivers also have a USB port; have you tried it as a USB drive?

Yea it works fine as a USB drive.... The only thing is that not only do I want to use this as firewire for the speed, it also happens with other 1394 devices. I will try and find it the way that you said, the only thing is that as it was installed as part of the huge service pack, it is already making harder to find than other updates.

I was just thinking.... maybe look into updating the motherboard chipset drivers. It could be that the SP1 update is slightly "incompatible" with the previous chipset software.... you can download the chipset drivers from the motherboard maker's web site....

It may be a mobo issue, but I have a asus p6t which I flashed with the latest update right before I installed vista, like two weeks ago. So unless the latest update is incompatible with the driver....I just don't know. The drive is working fine now as USB....I just really want that extra speed, especially when I am transfering large files. I am pretty regularly transfering things from 10-100GB so it kind of sux. I just can't figure out what is going on....

If the drive is a pre-built (like from Seagate or WD or Maxtor) check their web site and see if this is a known problem... if you built it yourself using an enclosure, maybe you can contact the manufacturer of the enclosure... in either situation, maybe the AC/DC adapter for the drive is failing. Try testing it with a multimeter to see if it's doing what it should. Other than these suggestions (which are admittedly fairly weak :-o rolleyes ) I don't know what else to tell you....
    Good luck!
    ;)
