I'm new here so hopefully this is in the right spot.
I have 2 laptops, one is an older compaq presario and the other is a newer asus. The asus hard drive corrupted so I took the hard drive from the compaq and it fit in the asus. I was able to access the contents and everything on the compaq's hard drive with my asus laptop. The only thing is it was unable to download a few drivers. The drivers were SM Bus Controller, PCI Simple Communications controller, Network Controller, Ethernet Controller, and Universal Serial Bus Controller (USB). When I put the hard drive back into the compaq laptop, all those drivers seem to work fine. The reason I don't use my compaq is because the screen is broken and I have to have a monitor hooked up to it, and the keyboard is missing keys. If anyone has any advice or suggestions I will greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

    Compaq presario cq60 224nr
    Asus x53e

You'll have to go to the ASUS support site, put in the information they request (serial number or whichever number they request) and go to the drivers download page, download the drivers you need and manually install each one. Take note that the drivers may be for a specific version of Windows so, you may need to look for drivers for whichever version of Windows you're running.

Ok. Also, do you know of a good program I can use to format my hard drive so I can get it ready to reinstall windows?

You could use HDD Low Level Format Tool available from Major Geeks. After it does the low level format, you'll need to initialize the disk and create a new simple volume in Disk Management with quick format. Windows installer will handle the rest.

Which version of Windows do you want to re-install?

I'm trying to re-install windows 7 home premium which is what came with the Asus. I tried last night but kept getting errors during the installation so I thought maybe if I tried to reformat the original hard drive again it would help. I used dban on it to wipe it before but I interrupted the wiping process after a few hours, but it seems to be cleared but I'm not sure... I originally thought the original hard drive was corrupted which is why I was going to use my Compaq hard drive...

If you have a Windows XP disc, you can use it to format the hard disc.

Okay I will try that. I think I have one from the old dell recovery disks.

Load the disc, restart and follow the prompts.
Select format, not quick format when you get to that screen.

Generally, you can "start fresh" if you go to the advanced options in any of the setup versions (XP, 7, 8, or 10), then the drive options, and delete all of the partitions on the drive, and click next. Setup will create new partitions automatically and keep going when you click next.
But; I'm worried that the Compaq drive is failing, too. What errors did you get?

Well to clear things up, I was going to use the Compaq hard drive because I originally thought the Asus hard drive was failing. Now I thought I would give the Asus hard drive a shot and try and see if I can get it to work. On the Asus hard drive, the errors I was getting when I tried to install Win 7 were 0x80070057, 0x80070017 and a few other errors that I can't recall at the moment unless I try to reinstall it again. I can do that if you'd like me to.

This is an edit to my last post. I tried to reinstall with a win 10 cd I made when I was able to create the free upgrades. Then I tried the Win 7. These are the errors I got
    Win 10: \windows\system32\boot\winload.efi or .exe
Win 7: Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available and restart the installation. Error code 0x8007045D.

That last error, 0x8007045D, is indicative of a failing hard disk drive as it is caused by an I/O error on the device (read bad sector) and modern hard disk drives are supposed to have no bad sectors.
Hard drives, FYI, are seven times more fragile than a raw egg when they are running and almost 90% of the laptops brought to me for "it won't boot" problems have been damaged by an excessive shock.
Drives; though, are really quite cheap, these days. Are you in the U.S. or, if not, what country are you in?

Yes I am in the U.S.. That's what I was originally thinking is that the hard drive was bad which is why I was going to use my compaq one in the Asus instead. I just didn't wanna completely whipe the factory settings but I will if need to for now.
