i had a new cd burner put in yesterday but i have a weird and puzzling problem.since installing the new cd-rewriter,drives D and E are not detected anywhere on my computer, they are not listed in my BIOS,devicemanager,or "my computer"."my computer"just shows my floppy drive and drive c,and as i said the cd-rom drives are nowhere to be found.whats weiird is that when the computer is booting up or put a disk in,the light on the cd tray blinks as it should, but windows simply doesnt detect them,as i said even in BIOS no cd-rom drives are even listed.i am not very hardware literate,so you'll have to "dumb it down"so i can understand it,lol, but i am pretty good at following instructions.my OS is XP sp2,the new cd-rewriter is a "liteon cd-writer 52x32x52x.if you need more info i'll be glad to give it,thanks in advance, just don't forget the "dumbing it down"part, lol

You need to make sure that one of your cdroms (usually the one that is at one end of the cable) is set as master. The other cdrom as slave. Usually checking the back of the cdrom you will see a small plastic square thing. This is the jumper. Now, usually there is some writing near these jumpers that show Master, slave, CS (cable select). You just need to move one of these jumpers to primary(master) and the other cdrom needs to be set as secondary (slave).

a decent picture that shows the jumper and the pins....

If your computer is not from the dinasour days....you can put all jumpers on CS (cable select) and the computer will automatically sort it out!! Obviously if that doesn't work, then you try the settings like "theefool" explained!!

The computers of the last 2-3 years seem to like the CS jumper better than anything!!

Yeah, CS may work. But, I'm just locked in my habits.

i guess i'm in over my head, because i looked at the picture i dont see anything at all that looks like the jumper the picture showed.however,i can't get a real good look at all of the back of the cwriter, because see i didnt install myself, because i don't know how,it's very hard for me to understand, and i dont know how to take it out to get a better look at it and i certainly couldn't install it myself,im just not mechanicly inclined, but from what i can see i dont see anything that looks like that jumper.a freind installed it for me,he said he might come back next week to look at it,,but i'm hoping somehow i'll figure it out before then i'm so low on free space.anyway i'll keep trying, thanks for all the replies and keep 'em coming if you think of something that might help me,thanks again

If you take the side off of the case...with the computer off and the power unplugged, ofcourse...you will see a couple of screws in the side of the drive...remove those...and the ones on the other side!! Yes you will have to take the other side off too probably!! Now unplug the flat wide gray cord ( if the case is small and everything is cramped in there, then you might have to waight to unplugg everything until after you slide the drive out some), and the little rectangular plug that has the different colored wires coming out of it, and there MIGHT be a little tiny wire plugged into the opposite side...unplug that to, and the little bitty tiny chord you will probably have to GENTLY wiggle straight up and down for it to release!! Now the whole drive should slide straight out (unless you have a case with a funky frontside design...you will have to remove the front of the case also)...don't worry it really isn't as involved as it seems!! That should allow you to see what it is we are talking about!!

As far as putting it back in...just reverse and repeat everything...put the drive in and connect all the chords back the way they were, then put the screws back in the side once you get the front flush where you want it positioned!! When you plug the wires back in...there is only one way that the connectors can adapt!! The end of the flat gray wire has a black rectangular connector that should have a key (a little bump) on one side and that goes into the slot on the adaptor on the back side of the drive!! The plug with the different colored wires...if you notice two edges are squared and two edges are cornered, obviously it will only go in one way!! The little tiny wire (if there is one) has a little snap that will snap into a hole on the connector on the drive, it is small so get a good look at what i'm talking about while you have the drive out!!

Obviously...while you got it out you need to check the jumper like we explained in the previous post!!

You might want to print out this whole thread, unless you have a second computer, before you shut down to disassemble!!

If you got more questions...don't hesitate to ask!!!!

sorry, but everything you said was way,way over my head, lol.very overwhelming,i think im just gonna have to give up on it,i appreciate the replies, but as i said all this is way above what i can understand,i couldnt see any of the things that were refered to on my drive, but again thats my fault,i apreciate the help and replies, but at this point i don't even understand how to remove the new drive,i obviously got in way over my head

    Sorry to overwhelm you!!! LOL

If you don't want to wait for your friend...and you live in the general vicinity of a Best Buy....call the "Geek Squad"...they will come to your house...I think it is around $150 dollars, but they don't charge by the hour, it is just a flat fee!!

They would be able to do what we are explaining!!

Is this a custom computer? Or a HP, Dell, Gateway, etc? What model? Also, if it is custom, what kind of case?

what about the white plugs from the back of the cd-drive,the ones that say p4,p2,p5,etc,are they to be plugged in in a certain order, because some are plugged in and some are not
