Drives formatted on mac

My girlfriends dad has a bunch of ZIP disc that were formatted on a Mac in 2003-ish. On these disc, he has a bunch of images that he wants to convert onto an online album. He no longer has the mac.

I have an external zip drive (100 mb type) and tried getting the images off that way. Whenever I click on the disc, I get the message, 'disc is not formatted, do you want to format now?'

does anyone know why this problem is occurring/how i can fix it?

It's possible to open Mac drives on a PC - using MacDrive. Unfortunately, you have to pay for it. I think there's a 7-day trial but it's limited, maybe 1 small file at a time can be copied, I'm unsure because I couldn't see any obvious reference on the site.

I used to use it some years ago, it worked fine.

There is (or was) another program that's similar, sorry - can't remember the name of it.

PS., it may also be possible to transfer the files across to your hard drive if you boot your PC from a live Linux distribution, Knoppix perhaps, worth looking into because it'll be free .
