DRIVING ME CRAZY! user icon wont appear in start menu

Hi,

This is my last resort if you geeks don't know then I give up!
I am running windows XP pro service pack 2 and have tweaked
it now and again to get the best out of it.

I purchased windowblinds and it's really cool there are some
pretty good skins that make windows look pretty slick a
favourite of mine was GT3 and when I applied this skin a
few months ago it worked PERFECT!!!!

To my knowledge I have not since messed around with any
other display settings as I had it exactly as I wanted it and
I had a cool icon in the start menu, with my user name displayed
nicely to the right of it.

I can't remember when it happened but just noticed one day
that the icon had gone and was replaced by just a raised grey
box and my user name is over the top of it instead of to the right!

I have tried everything. I tried re-applying the icon, I tried a different
icon and even a windows default icon with no luck. I tried making sure
both were enabled in gpedit.msc and checked the registry entries and
all appears fine!

Some1 on another forum claims that the user icon will NOT display
in the start menu if the welcome screen is disabled (mine is). My
welcome screen has infact been disabled for over year and when
I applied the skin a few months ago it worked PERFECT!

It is not the skin that is corrupt as this happens with ALL the skins
and even if windowblinds is unloaded??

Windowblinds can make windows look good, as it can screw it up.
Try to completely remove and reinstall windowblinds, as this should revert windows to its standard settings.

 

I have tried both GT3 skins, and I see no problems like you are experiencing. It would be helpful to know what version of Windowblinds you are using, and if it's a trial or registered version.

If you have any further problems you can try the forums at Stardock. Someone else might have experienced the same problem as you.

 

FIXED!!!

Well you are not going to believe this! This is REALLY bizarre, I actually gave up trying to fix it and just began to live with it.

I have a Netgear Wireless PCI Adapter WG311v3 and the signal drops all the time, so I decide to invest in an Edimax card as they have 3 antennas, so I uninstalled my Netgear card and.....

The second it uninstalled the icon instantly re-appeared on my start menu and the next time I rebooted I had by Windows XP blue welcome screen back as well???

How the hell can the netgear card have stopped it showing??? It makes sense now though I could not pinpoint exactly when the icon first dissappeared but It was around the time I installed the Netgear card!
