I'd like to see your DrTcp settings so I can compare them in case I've missed something. In case you haven't heard of DrTcp, it enables you to tweak your Broadband ( or dialup) settings. It doesn't find the optimum settings (you have do the research, but it allows you easily update any / all settings).

Remember though, to reboot after each update to enable the new settings to take effect. Also take a printscreen printout of your initial (and any other changes) so you can go backwards to your original settngs in case you stuff up. :D

DrTcp is not available from MG :cry but you can get it at http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp

2 thumbnails, one is mine, one is an example from the link above. They vary wildly depending upon PC and degree of tweaking. The standard default is usually hopeless for speed when compared to tweaked versions.

I've shown my downloads speeds for comparison purposes. XP SP 3 at 667 KB/s, (300+ meg download) for example. It is worthwhile experimenting.

When I first used my old Dynalink Router (now replaced), using the MS defaults I connected to Florida (using dslreports speedtest Florida link) for a download test I got 33KB/s. After 20 minutes tweaking I got 179KB/s from the same test at Florida. So it is well worthwhile, IMO. Bazza

PS: For best results TCP Receive Windows should be equally divisable by your MTU / Dialup (RAS) MTU setting, with no remainder.

In my case, 4918032 /1428 = 3,444 (with no remainder). Don't ask me why, it's what I've read. :D Baz

For those of you interested, here's a quick tutorial or 'how-to' for DrTCP.
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/578
I first stumbled across DrTCP maybe 8 months ago whilst killing time at work. To be 100% honest, I've tried different settings and never really noticed any increases in internet speed, but then again I only messed around with it for maybe 5 minutes :p There is, however, one little tweak that users of XP Pro can use (sorry, no gpedit in XP Home :( )
Bazza- I'll play around with DrTCP in the next few hours when I can tear myself away from the MG forums for a few minutes ;) I'll post a screenshot of my best settings. Here's a shot of my speed test from 5 minutes ago, before any DrTCP tweaking. Somehow, I don't think I'll be able to improve on it, but I'll try....

Thanks for your contribution, dlb. I have reset my Bandwidth from 5% to 0%.

I had read about this before but had forgotten it. I think it is worthwhile to tweak your settings. Probably not so important in USA and UK where distance to your ISP may not so great, but here in OZ it can be thousands of miles (or kilometres).

To all remember, kb/s is only 1/8 of KB/s. Make sure you are talking about KB/s or kb/s so we don't get confused. :D Bazza

Bump :D Lots of reads but only 1 reply. Are you all happy with your download speeds? Bazza
