I bought an internet radio and would like to hard-wire it to the phone line in my bedroom. I have ATT DSL hooked to my desktop PC in the living room, and no wireless network.

    Questions:
    1) Can I configure a new modem with my PC in the living room, and when it's done, take the modem to my bedroom and hook it to my internet radio's USB port for internet service? (I have an ethernet/USB adapter on order).

The result I want is to have phone line > modem > radio set up, all wired.

    2) If for some reason I cannot do that, possibly because of IP issues or something, is there anything I can do to get a wired system going, or must I go wireless?

Thanks very much, I appreciate your support!

    The short answer is no.

Lets start from the beginning. An Internet radio either needs Wifi or Wired connection to a Router, if you have more than one device connecting through the modem, unless the modem happens to be a gateway/router, then you do not need a router.

As for the Ethernet to USB adapter, no it will not work with the radio. Also as for the phone line, ethernet does not use telephone wire, unless it is Cat-5e or Cat-6 that is used for telephone wiring, then you just need to figure out what wire goes to what room, from where they all terminate at, and then connect to a patch panel on one end, and a RJ-45 on the other, get a switch to allow you connection to a router and all ethernet connections in the residence.

Ironman: it's a Grace (company) Mondo (model). I think I'm going to run about a 75' Cat 5E cable and hard-wire it using a new modem/router combo I'm about to buy with the wifi turned off. I really don't want to run a wireless setup (to retain security and to improver signal transmission). Your thoughts would be appreciated.

If the modem in the living room has multiple ethernet ports on it and you run that 75 ft ethernet cable to your internet radio in the bedroom then that should work. Be sure to get the usb to ethernet adapter specifically made for that radio because just any probably wont work.

as for has having multiple modems in your home i have no idea if that would have problems or not. ive never had the chance to try two modems in one home. if i had to guess though there would probably be problems with that.

Wireless would be the choice i would go with personally.

Also if your going to leave the cable lying on the floor be very careful not to trip. i know someone that broke their ankle like that.

Thanks Ironman. I'm going to get a wireless modem/router and hard-wire the radio for now. Will do wireless when I get a soundbar with streaming for my TV later on. I think you're right about multiple modems-it may be an IP problem with my ISP. I've learned a bunch in the last week or two...

Using Wifi does not create a security issue. It is when people do not secure the WiFi with a secure Passphrase, then you have issues.

Hundreds of thousands of people use Wifi all of the time, and have no issues. Also it is a lot easier to use a device like your Internet radio, than having to drag around a cat-5e cable all the time.

Thanks Brownizs. I may be running on old info about wifi. What can I say? Oldster myself.
